Anyone any experience?

Theres various prices on ebay from tower SMD types through to ones with separate ballasts like HID kits.

But do any of them actually challenge normal headlights or HID's?

I suppose most LED "bulbs" would be pretty much useless in reflector type headlights, but LED projector headlights are standard in a few different car models since MY 2008 so there are definitely possibilities.

I would love to see a set of IS200 headlights with Morimoto H1 projectors and these LEDs:

I'm not sure about the laws in the UK, but in many EU countries you're not allowed to retrofit HID kits unless your car is fitted with self leveling headlights and high pressure washers. I'm interested in knowing if it applies to LED lights as well.

I think a lot of the problem with LEDs is that to get the required light output, they need to be a LOT more powerful than even the most powerful tower type you normally get off eBay.

But when they are that powerful, they also produce a large amount of heat, which unlike a halogen or HID type bulb is produced mainly at the base of the bulb, hence the massive heat sinks on the ones Patrik posted a picture of. They have been known to melt bulb holders because the heat generated is just too high for the plastic retaining clips/rings etc.

You'd also need something with forward facing light output, as the actual LED 'bulbs' themselves are not transparent like a glass HID/halogen bulb, so they stop a reflector working properly and create gaps in the light output.

And as Patrik said, they would still be governed by the same pain in the bum laws as HIDs currently are.
