Got my cambelt changed today at 96,000 miles. The mechanic said there were loads of fluffy flint like fibers at the bottom around the pulleys and my belt was about 20% thinner. Was it rubbing unto something or is that normal?

Not sure, it might have been rubbing or it could have been the idler or tensioner pulley that were worn and rubbing on it. Did you get those changed too ?

Sounds like it might have been the original belt on there, you were probably lucky it lasted that long !

Had the belt and pulley changed. It was a good thing I did. Did not have info if it was changed when I bought it. It looked like it was on it's way to snapping. whew!

Icemahn you were lucky with that belt, my old is200 was at 70,000 miles and look like it was about to snap.
I would always change at 60,000 to be on the safe side.

Just a quick question and sorry to poke my nose in, am I a bit daft to let the cambelt in my LS430 go for 100,000 miles or 10 years? Just a bit worried as I know that some belts on the IS200 have been quite a bit weak after 60,000 miles. I'm already on 77,000 miles and I can just imagine the size of the bill if it goes.

Many thanks.

I think it's just the IS200 that was changed to 60k - all the others were 100k. If you're worried though prob no harm in getting someone to just take a look at it Smile

But yeah, done well to get that to 96k if it is the original belt - if it's not the original then that's quite aggressive wear!

Jim my 430 was done at 70,000 and they said he looked like it would of gone on to 100,000.
The recommended mileage on the 430 is 100,000

Lexus will probably take a peek at your cambelt for free, Jim, and let you know if there's any obvious signs of heavy wear. They won't give you a guarantee that it'll be ok, but at least they should be able to tell if it's in a bad state already.
