but... my question is this - i want to get a HID kit for my main beam, and i was wondering when i will flash someone eg to show them im letting them pull out or whatever i think it wont work because my dipped beam hid bulbs take about 5 seconds to warm up to full brightness...so if i installed HIDs into main beam and jus flicked the lever a few times i think the person would just see some very dim flickering light...it looks really good on cars with OEM hid kits like fiesta st's and mazeratis- i been flashed by them and it looks like a camera flash just an extremely bright light in 2 quick successions...is this achievable with an aftermarket kit? or will i only be able to use them say when im driving down an empty country lane and there is no-one there i turn them on, wait for them to heat up etc...

yes it just seems like the OEM ones dont need to warm up and seem to go to full temperature within a fraction of a second...also flickin HIDs on and off significantly reduces their life span...the only thing which i can think off that can explain this phenomenon is if the cars which flashed me has bi-xenon meaning that the bulb was on but the reflector position chanegd

08-10-2016, 03:32 AM #4Something that I didn't realise until Wozza pointed it out, is that on an IS200, when you flash your main beam, the dipped beam flashes too. So if you have HIDs on the dipped beam then they will try and flash anyway.

But I have to admit that the ones on our Merc don't appear to have any sort of warm up time whatsoever so something has changed with OEM - surely this tech must filter down to aftermarket kits too with the higher quality ones.
Also need to bear in mind that a lot of OEM stuff is bixenon - so it's the same bulb that is dipped and high beam, and a moving part exposes the full beam for a short time when activated.
Steve's right about the full beams as well - it's the same on the newer cars too, whenever I've been flashed by a GS or similar, the headlights also come on when the full beams are turned on.

There's something wrong with that kit if I'm honest, mine take about a second to warm up the very first time they're switched on, after that they flick on an off instantly.

08-10-2016, 05:12 AM #6My Is200 has HIDs on both beams and to be honest I don't have that much cause to use full because the HIDs are that bright anyway.

Found out on my old set that the starter system is built into the ballast so over heats and that's when you get a set that wont ignite very well after a bit of use? Or they fail to light at all as the starter is breaking down!
When i built the BMW Mini HID lamps, we used to get a lot of returns due to the starters failing, so the company then went to external starters and seemed to solve the problem with a lot less failing and giving instant light when turned on:biggrin:

My old hid kit with the huge ballasts seemed to take ages to warm up for some reason, But the kit i have now with the slim ballasts and external starters seem quite instant?
