Sills losing paint, slight rust bubbles.
Sills losing paint, slight rust bubbles.
Ok so I've noticed some slight signs of age on my IS200 front sills and I want to nip them in the bud. I've trawled these forums and have come to the conclusion that a body shop is a better idea than patching myself.
Is this correct? I don't mind giving it over to a professional (though I am a little wary given a recent nightmare :mellow Is this likely to be expensive? How hard is it to do myself? I buffed and re-painted my wiper arms and bee sting that had flakey paint / rust but that's nothing compared to matching the body paint work.
P.S. I have a compressor and some sprayguns.
Most paint jobs depend on prep work being done right if this is not done correct then it won't take long for the paint to come off or rust to come through.
How good is paint work (is the colour strong still) ?
If its faded then your more likely to need a larger area doing to blend it in...
Id send it to a pro mate,
but try and do some of the prep yourself, thats what costs the money!
Get some photos up mate, if it's not that bad Bilt Hamber may be the way to go
I would say send it to a pro as well, and im the sort of person that likes to do everything myself. As its on the sill, getting a perfect colour match isnt the biggest problem, as its only a small area. But to be honest if you take it to a bodyshop you get some comeback on it. Say it starts rusting again next year, they will more than likely sort it out again for you.
As its only a small area it shouldnt cost too much, but as stav says, it depends on how much prep is required.
Any chance you can put a pic up of the problem area? It will give us a better idea of what needs doing
You will very rarely get bodyshops willing to redo work a year later reguarding rust! as its like an arch, no matter how well u do it (cut the whole area out and weld a whole new arch in) the area welded or worked on is proun to rust, no matter how wel you do it, its allways gonna be a weak area,
Im like hurricane though, i like to tinker round with stuff like this meself but i would send it to a pro
They normally offer some sort of garuntee on their work. If your paying for a colour match, then if they get it wrong they will have to fix it. To be honest for such a small area it shouldnt be too much. They most likely wont need to blend it into surrounding panels
body shop all the way when it comes to colour matching. I don't trust the smart repair guys - besides body shops are more than competitive nowadays.
It really is about 1 inch of flaked paint on the driver side arch and a bubble on the passenger side.. . I'll take it to a professional. Must have let this post slip under the radar sorry about that!, many thanks for the replies and advice uncle OJC!
