More internet issues
Just when it seemed I finally sorted out all my internet issues a while back with a new router after the great advice on here, my modem has started playing up - it's about 10 years old so not a huge surprise. Called up VM who agreed to send me a new one, which arrived a few days ago. The problem is it's one of their new "hubs" which is a combined modem and wireless router. Haven't plugged it in yet as I'm not sure whether I can use this, reading about it on the net (Netgear VMDG280) the general consensus is that it's not very good.
What I've been trying to work out is if I can use this as just a modem and still continue to use my cisco router? Apparently VM were supposed to be altering the firmware to allow use as just a modem but this hasn't arrived yet, and then I read all sorts of stuff about double NATs and DMZs that I have no clue about :tongue_smilie:
Does anyone know about these and whether I will be able to use my existing router? If it's not possible I might have to try and hassle VM into sending me a standalone modem but I've been reading that they don't send these out any more so that may not be an option.
If you were using a modem before the router then I'm guessing your internet comes straight off the phone line? i.e. it's not 'cable broadband'
In which case what you can do is have the new VM modem/router taking the feed from the phone line, and then use an ethernet cable to plug that into your Cisco router to do all the redistribution, so you only really use the modem function of the VM one?
Not ideal as you have unused hardware in the chain, and every bit of hardware you have between the socket and your computer is just something else to slow your internet down (mainly ping times, if you're into your online gaming)
Will keep this short as on me phone. I have plenty of recent experience with the so called "Super" Hub. The most recent update will allow you to use it in modem mode. R26 I think is the version. If it is not already installed, it should auto update. Set it up with an ethernet cable, and log in using the details printed on the back of it at 192.168.0.1 to check. If not, power it down for 1 minute and it should update on startup, leave over night if not. Then simply enable modem mode on the advanced settings on the router. It is an ok router in itself, not the best though, and I'll be routing mine through my D Link router once I reclaim it from work! Hope this helps.

Stoney Though this makes sense generally, in this case, no. This hub can be a bit pants, and if you have a high spec alternative router it is advisable to run this type of setup.

Quote:• Plug your cable router’s WAN port into any of the LAN ports on the Hub.
• Plug your PC into any Hub LAN port and access the management page. 192.168.0.1
• On the LAN IP page examine the DHCP lease info; you should see your PC and the second router. Note the MAC address of the router and add it to the DHCP reservation section and give the second router an IP address of say 192.168.0.10. (Use ipconfig/all in a cmd window to find the MAC address of your PC if your not sure which is which.)
• Now go to the DMZ host page on the Hub and enter the same IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.10). This means that the Hub will pass all traffic to the second router without any checks or filters.
• Turn off the second router and back on again, plug your PC into the second router, login and
set the router’s login page to "Does your Internet connection require a login" to NO and then you should see the WAN or Internet as 192.168.0.10.
• You’re ready
• Don't forget to disable wireless on the Hub and use the wireless on the second router. It is also best to turn the firewall off on the Hub.
Done a bit more research on this and it appears only the superhub has the updated firmware, the hub has it scheduled towards the end of the year so hopefully it won't take long.
In any case, I found the following instructions on the VM forums:
Quote:• Plug your cable router’s WAN port into any of the LAN ports on the Hub.
• Plug your PC into any Hub LAN port and access the management page. 192.168.0.1
• On the LAN IP page examine the DHCP lease info; you should see your PC and the second router.
