Had to ditch the car......
Had to ditch the car......
Parthiban - I had to leave my car on Sat too on Ashton Rd in Oldham. I was at my mates garage working on project, we went outside at around 8pm and were shocked at the snow. I thought that once I got to the main rd I would would fine, but wrong. As soon as I tried to turn onto the main road (right turn) I was stuck in the middle of the road and traffic on both sides of the road stopped. After a few attempts I managed to get the car straight but then the backend was all over the place. I carried on as far as I could buts its a step road and I decided it was too dangerous to carry on and left the car parked up on double yellows - had no other option. Even front wheel drive cars were all over the place and I was afraid that someone would slide into me where the car was parked. I left the car and got a lift from my mate in his snow mobile (a Reno Megane with one winter tyre! ) and returned at 11.30pm at night once the gritters had been out and managed to get the car home.
Today was not as bad, but manged to get stuck in the car park of the place I was visiting today but they had some gritt and then finally also got stuck trying to get back on the drive when I got home.
I really hope it doesn't ice over tonight otherwise not sure I'll be able to make it tomorrow.
Yeah it's a weird feeling not being able to move at all, and blocking all the traffic in the process - I annoyed the truck driver I mentioned earlier but then he got stuck too so it wasn't all bad.
Thing is the snow wasn't that bad (only about an inch) which is why the little cars were getting up no probs, and even a 325 steamed past as his traction control was clearly getting him up the hill (as it was an MSport so probably on similar tyres to mine)
But yes I think it's best I didn't make it on to the road as I doubt I would have got far. The real problem is getting it home now, I'm guessing nothing happened when you left it on double yellows? Mine should be fine in the taxi rank but I'd like to get it out of there today if possible. However if the snow doesn't melt I'm not going to be able to......
I'll have to call the AA and see if they'll give me a tow if that is the case and fingers crossed they'll say yes!
Fraid we had to leave the mr2 also. Outside an old peoples home. The worst thing is it slid against a curb and damaged a wheel. I know it could have been worse though. Called the aa they gave a lead time of 8 hours. So took the train home.
Yeah I think calling the AA for a tow is going to result in a long wait. If I were you I would put a note inside your windscreen, Parthiban, to say you had to abandon the car there. Hopefully any traffic wardens will be sensible given the extreme conditions.
Looks from the forecast that things should get better though, I think yesterday was probably the worst of it.

main roads aren't bad here it's just the housing estates where I live unfortunately I'll be able to get off my drive and out of my close but I wouldn't get back in and I don't want to not be able to get back in and end up leaving the car on the road side, as we all know what happend last time
For those that don't know the story: was driving back from my gf's when my clutch completely went, I had to get the RAC to to me back to a garage which unfortunately was shut due to it being sunday so I thought that's fine put it in the posh housing estate next to the garage on the roadside out of everyones way for Monday morning. Now at this point there was no snow at all, so I was going to pick the car up Monday lunch and get it in the garage for the clutch to be sorted, went up to the car to find it in this state:
^ that's the recovery guy.
a Van driver had driven into my car doing a lot of damage and not even bothered to leave a note, thanks

Guys,
Don't want to worry you, but some breakdown organisations are advising drivers not to drive in the snow and breakdown cover is what it says on the tin- breakdown cover, dragging a car out of the snow may not be classed as a breakdown.

i work in the city (london bridge) and all the trains were suspended yesterday as were the busses and traffic was at standstill... i left work at 5 and having no choice had to walk 12 miles to my house....through slush, snow and ice....3 hours later, my body aching more than i could ever remember, my shoes ruined, my feet soaked and blue from the socks and the cold, i stumbled through the front door...but you know what cheered me up? seeing all those cars dirty and salty and wet and snowed in sliding in the snow and me knowing that my lexus is washed and polished and dry in the garage mwahahahaha:closedeyes:
