The problem arises from incomplete burn or detonation overheating the ceramic part of the plug, which releases the iridium tip to fall into the bore :o

Isn't that a different problem though, i.e. not a problem with the plug itself ?

Never heard of it being a problem on the IS200, and the factory plugs are iridium-tipped.

Are the OEM MR2 plugs iridium ones, or an aftermarket option ?

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

I don't think iridium plugs existed when the MR2 was released lol. Unfortuantely pre and post ignition does happen in engines (admittedly more so in forced induction) and that breaks the plugs down. It's more of an issue with iridium than copper plugs due to their design - the tip element on an iridium plug is smaller and more easily seperated from the body.

I still wonder whether this is more of an MR2 issue rather than an iridium plug issue. Admittedly I know virtually nothing about the MR2 engine. But I do know that this doesn't seem to be a common issue (an issue at all ?) on the IS200s, and that the IS200 from the start had iridium plugs.
