Marsdendean so what was wrong with the mitts essex?

Lambs wool mitts hold onto the dirt/grit more than a grout sponge does. These are easy to rinse off and I prefer the feel of them, easier to use for me. The mitts are also heavy when full of water so you have to be careful not to add any extra pressure to it, just use it's own weight. When I use the sponge I go in straight lines with very little pressure, section at a time and turning it over halfway through.

A while ago I decided to use my mitt for a wash and it was actually marring the paint, plus I noticed some additional swirls had appeared afterwards. It could be that the mitt was getting on abit but I went back to the sponge. A microfibre mitt would probably be my choice now if I was to start this detailing lark again.

Another thing to remember is drying towels can inflict swirls as well if they're too rough. Never wash them with softener, just liquid detergent and they should be fine. A simple test for mitts and towels is to lightly rub them on a new cd...if the cd scratches then the theory is so will your paint so use with caution or keep for wheels, door shuts etc.
