Cant you slide a screwdriver through the front to lock the fins inside mate, thats how i did mine a while back, the main internals are a solid core so shouldn't do any damage, as long as you don't have to use to much pressure? and crack the casing? but it should be ok! best to take it off really so you have more room to play with?

Yeh i know mate, i used to build alternators and starters for Lucas a few years ago and think i ever only broke 1 doing it like that, then they sorted me the right tools out for the job :biggrin: does work though :laugh:

yep ive changed many a front pulley/nut on the earlier lucas 17ACR by wedging the fan, worst I did was slightly bent a blade but easy to straighten

Damnit!! I noticed those fins and was 1/2 tempted to wedge something in there. But literally as I had the screwdriver hovering over the hole I changed my mind.
