steviewevie what's suspended is a permanent ban from the sport for them.

That's a good point actually, if they do anything similar again they're out for good so it's not quite as lenient as it may seem.

And again I think the lack of a monetary fine is that they didn't make a monetary gain (from the FIA at least) as a result of it - I assume that Renault's final championship position wouldn't have changed either way.

The judgement from the FIA doesn't mention anything about the result of the GP in question. Surely Alonso's victory should be taken away from him in the official records, given that it was gained by cheating (by the team, that is, although he wasn't found guilty of any wrong-doing) ?

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.

I might be wrong on this, but I don't think the race result can be changed.

Most news reports that I've seen seem to be questioning how Renault got off so easily. I still can't really understand it myself.

The message that this sends out seems to be - Fix a race, and as long as you sack the people that did it, you're fine, there's no problem ? :confused1:

I think there's definitely a certain amount of care being taken to not force Renault out (not entirely sure why though)

I still think it's down to the effect on the championship - overall effect of this was just one race outcome. Overall effect of McLaren's cheating was to alter the course of an entire championship and possibly two seasons in terms of their rate of development (2007 and 2008). There was no way of knowing how much they improved their car due to having those stolen secrets.

It does say the reasons will be disclosed soon, so we will know why for sure soon

I don't really see why the effectiveness of the cheating has much/any relation to the punishment. Surely cheating is cheating, whether it "worked" or not ?

Anyway, isn't winning a race kind of a pretty nice thing to gain for cheating ? Due to the money received, publicity, kudos etc ?

Perhaps Force India should cheat their way to a race win and then just fire a couple of people afterwards ? I know you're not seriously suggesting this, but this is the kind of message the FIA seem to have sent out here.

I have to agree with you there mate, personally I would've liked to have seen Renault kicked out for a year or two (although personally I expected them to do the same to McLaren)

What I was saying before is just the logic I think they must have used to end up with this outcome, otherwise it makes no sense at all.

Will have to wait for their reasons to know for sure.

This will have hurt Renault in the pocket. I can't help feeling, though, that these two sponsors have used this as an excuse to pull out and therefore save money.

Theres a few million down the drain. I can only think this will be nearly impossible to replace especially with more teams chasing a smaller pool of sponsors.

DJ Wozza I can't believe Renault didn't get a fine as well as a suspended ban. Irrespective of sponsor issues they have pretty much got off completely free
(if they keep their noses clean for the length of the suspended ban).

I think the FIA took the stance of trying to be a bit sensitive to keep them in the sport - I imagine they thought that there would be greater overall damage if Renault left F1.......

But with no sponsors, and probable difficulty to find new sponsors after a scandal like this (especially in these financial times) how long are Renault going to last anyway?
