UPDATES HALF WAY DOWN THE FIRST POST

only 5 days to go till JAE and i thought'd i'd start a thread to keep you upto date with a project i need to finish before then.
Well as you all know i had the single conversion completed on my car.

Well unfortuantly around 200 miles later the car completely lost boost and the turbo was making a noise that didnt sound nice!

I havent posted about it because i didnt know what caused it and i didnt want any mud slinging before i had all the facts.

So the first thing was to try and figure out what the fault was, i knew the turbo was goosed, but what had cause it?
an option it could have been was a blown headgasket, lots of boost and power, an engine thats not been rebuilt, and my right foot could have been too much. But on inspection using a compression tester everything seemed fine. but still had the mayonnaise in the cap:

So parked the car up in my parents garage and let the work begin.
Fist thing was to remove the turbo, box it up and get it back to Silverline to send back to the makers.
Then after discussion with Steve @ Silverline (who has supported me all the way) i decided to rebuild the head myself while the turbo was away.
I stripped the head down and examined the Gasket, theres no defect and everything seemed right?!

But now the head was off might as well clean it up, new gaskets etc. So ordered a top gasket set from Toyota (About £140) came from Japan in about 4 days so VERY pleased with the service. Got 10 litres of Toyota red coolant while i was at it.
Also bought some new sparks, as when mapping they had tried 1.2 bar but it was blowing the spark out so some new ones should solve that.

So sent the turbo off and the result was Water starvation causing the plastic bearing housings to melt. (apparently a Ball bearing turbo uses Oil whilst running, and the water is most important when you turn it off)

here a pic when i sent it off:

But due to a customer loyalty scheme or something its not been too expensive to repair and is on its way back across the atlantic to hopefully be here before JAE.

Away with 5 days to go till JAE my car looked like this:

(the fluid came from the head when i took it off)

I've taken the head to work and cleaned it up in a parts cleaner just to spruce it up. but today the real work began.
Yesterday morning i nipped (when i say nipped its a 220 mile round trip) to Silverline and picked up my brand new ARP head bolts. You cant reuse the standard ones so may as well uprate. Also we think maybe the heads been lifting slightly under the boost so this will stop it.

So today the work started as i had all the bits for the head rebuild, just awaiting the turbo.

I spent the day changing the valve stem oil seals. They came in the gasket set so seemed stupid not to change them.
Started with a lot of messing about with the first valve spring compressor i bought, only to get too annoyed, returning it and going to Halfrauds to buy a better one (spending the voucher my sis got me for my birthday).
Anyway after that was fairly easy, had a small panic when i lost one of the retaining collets, but after half an hour crawling around the garage floor i found the little ******.

Also changed the injector seals as they were in the kit:

So tomorrow after work, straight to my parents, head on, torquing up and start fitting all the other bits.

Still lots of bits in the seal bag though:

So theres my story and i will keep the thread updated over the next few days to see what happens.

In a funny Geordie accent "day 2 in Stav's dad's garage"

Well today i had a couple of touches.
Firstly i realised i'd booked Thursday off so ive got extra time to prep.
and secondly Steve rang me at 4.35pm and told me my Turbo had arrived!! Not bad considering it was only posted Friday from the US!

So tomorrow as soon as i can get out of work im making the 200+ round trip again to pick it up.

Anyway this evening i was back in the garage,
i finished the last three valve stem seals, then it was time for the bit i was dreading - fitting the head.
I carefully fitted the gasket then whilst standing on the engine mount and the front bar i lowered the head on, then carefully greased up the head bolts, screwed them in, fitted the washers and bolts and torqued them up in 3 even passes to 60 lb/ft as instructed.
I will retighten them tomorrow to once theyve settled.

but after that i got on with fitting some other ancilleries and by the end of the night i was left looking like this:

And the parts pile looks a **** site smaller:

So hopefully with a fair wind getting to Silverline and back, and a bit of luck i *may* and i stress *may* be hearing the sweet sound of an engine ticking over tomorrow night. Confusedcared:

Day 3!

went to pick the Turbo up from Silverline today, then got home about half five and cracked on till now.

This is what she looks like:

Just need to do the timing belt, and couple of other bits.
Ive broke a plug for a sensor so will have to bodge that but then fill her up with fluids and we should be go tomorrow night! Confusedcared:

DAY 3! 2 Days to go

Well tonight i was back in the garage.
Had to go backwards a little by taking the radiator off, but it made doing the timing belt SOOO much easier.
Then i tightened up the last bits, repaired the broken sensor, and finally filled it up with fluids.

Next job was to check all the wiring, then disconnect the fuel pump, and the ignitors, and turn it over for a couple of minutes, this helped bleed the fluids around initially.

Then connected it all up, prayed a little, AND FIRED HER UP!

SHES ALIVE!!!!!!

I took her for a little drive with small amounts of boost and everything seems fine, couple of bit to check over in the light of day but touch wood were running fine!

I'm so pleased with myself for all the work ive done and hopefully it will all stick together to get me and my friends to JAE on Friday.
just a few other bits to do tomorrow, Stereo, bodywork, cleaning then pack everything up for JAE.

Thanks to everyone for the support.

Day 4, final touches

Well today i woke up and inspected the car before going anywhere, no big puddles under the car, all levels still ok, all looking good so far.

So then i started doing a few little jobs ready for tomorrow. Got a grand total of 3 of the huge list of jobs i wanted to do lol.

Fixed my passenger door speaker that was playing up.
Mounted my shiny new amp and hid all the wires away. For what must be the first time having the car the boot is actually presentable.

finally gave the car a jet wash, as i'll give it a better clean tomorrow at the show.

Never did the other little things i wanted but never mind, hopefully people wont notice lol.

Well now need the best of luck to make it there safely, and i'll hopefully see you all tomorrow about 9-10am.

Thanks for all the support again!:thumbup:
