I thought I had better put a driving instructors view on this.

What I have found over the years I have been doing this, in terms of teaching people how to park, is it's a skill which is quite easily attained and very easily replicated. As much as it annoy's Tesco and the like, I take my pupils into their carparks to have a go at driving into a bay, reversing out and vise versa after they have masterd the skill in a very quiet, unused carpark.

However, if this parking skill is not practiced frequently enough after passing a driving test, then this is where it all goes to peices. But, as an instructor, there is nothing I can do about this. Qualified drivers who have trouble parking would never think to contact their locall driving instructor to refresh their skills so don't be suprised to find your bumper/door stoved in.

There are many millions of motorists out there who all think they are experts in the driving field. This leads to a reluctance to learn or to change driving habits. Again, as a driving instructor, I can't teach anyone who does not want to be taught.

I can spend all my time teaching 17 year old's how to drive safely, showing them the correct and safeist techniques to use, hazzard awreness and planning techniques, parking and slow speed manoeuvering, dual carriageways and motorways etc, but at the end of the day, who are they going to listen too? Me, the driving instructor? I seriously doubt that. It's going to be the parents. You know, the type who think a good crusing speed in a 30mpg limit is 50mph. The type of person who uses a mobile phone whilst driving. The type of person who hasn't had their eye sight checked for years and can barely see properly. The type of person who see's driving as a chore which has to compleated as quickly as possible regardless of what the eventuall cost to life and limb might be.

It's all to do with attitude. How are we going to change that attitude? Answers on a postcard please because I have seriously given up trying.

That is fair actually, and sorry if we implied the driving instructor was at fault, because I don't think any of us meant that.

And yes parking is reasonably well covered, I remember having to learn how to park (parallel and bay) but I think it was too easy. Parking a micra in a space twice as big as I'd need to park the Lexus in is simply not good enough.

Same as with motorways - people have no experience of them, then suddenly pass their test and are allowed to drive at great speed on them. So many people I know do not even know what they are looking at when they look in their door mirrors, so how are they supposed to change lanes safely?

Again the instructor isn't at fault, the test simply isn't strict enough. And it's less about being able to drive, you just have to know "how" to pass the test in some cases. I know far too many people (mostly girls) who pass their tests with 1 or even zero minors, but get in a car with them and they are awful drivers who really have no clue what's going on around them.

We need change, how to implement it though I have no idea Smile

parthiban I do the same, don't generally park next to cars with a child seat in the back because I know they'll be leaning on the door as they strap their child in which probably means the door will be leaning on my car Smile

Hey not everyone does that, ive got a car seat on either side and i still manage to get them in and out without touching the next car.....but dont worry cause i do the same:lol:

oiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii... mostly girls ?? I know my perspective is different but ... statistics show its young lads who are far more dangerous because they tend to go out in groups streetracing and showing off to their mates. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying female drivers are better but from my experience the male youth is more prone to wrecklessness from peer pressure or alcohol/drugs and the female youth is probably more prone to chatting and not realising that driving a killing machine actually requires more concentration ! I think every generation, male and female .. has its good and bad habits .. they just change over the years

You got a point there Parthiban about the test. For a start, it doesn't include motorway driving. I use Bishop's Stortford test centre and not one of the fourty test routes they use include a dual carriage way where 70mph could be reached. The test isn't real world.

So, lets make the test much harder then. As of October the 4th this year the driving test is going to include somthing called Independant Driving. This is where the candidate will be required to follow road signs or directions from a diagram without being prompted on where to go verbally from the driving examiner. Basically this is to ensure that candidates can check mirrors, signal, position correctly into appropriate lanes etc on their own rather than waiting to be prompted. The time for the test has not been extended so it is still 38 to 40 minutes of driving. Because of the introduction of this independant driving, the candidate is now only required to carry out one reversing manoeuvre instead of two. The candidate can't fail on indipendant driving if they get lost from the route. So long as what they did to get lost from the route was safe, they have technically done nothing wrong. As you can imagine, this isn't going to improve road safety one little bit.

Now, anything to do with driving can be a potential vote winner for any givernment or ellection. Let's say that the givernment put's the price of a driving test up to £120 puunds from it's current £76. The driving test was going to last for an hour and a half to include all four manoeuvers, motorwars and independant driving. The number of minor faults down to 5 from 16. Therefor the cost of learning to drive is going to skyrocket because the standard required to pass the test is now so much higher. Road safety, should in theory, improve dramatically. But, so will the amount of un licenced drivers on the roads because more and more people will not be able to afford to do this. Secondly, and think about all the idiots out on the road as it is, are these idiots going to vote for a government which is going to increase the cost of getting a driving licence? I don't think so.

See how I've run out of ideas?

^^ Hmm i only partially agree

the girls in the call centre at my work are relentlessy bumping into things, slamming doors into other cars, hitting kerbs, narrowly missing people etc etc

i hear a different story daily!!!

the guys on the other hands can go for months without having as much as a near miss, then write the car off entirely :S

Ive never been sure on how the figures are collated for men v woman

is it number of accidents by gender?
is it cost of accidents by gender?
is it fatality rate by gender?

I would imagine number of accidents woman far outweight mean

whereas mens accidents are more costly and have a higher fatality rate?

lol carpediem.. you wish sweetheart... I think the aspect you're seeing is that girls talk.. and are more open and honest about the stupid errors they make .. you will very rarely if ever hear a man admit anywhere public, he kerbed his wheels etc.. You should go and do what Phil did and just sit and observe a major car park for a while, you will find thoughtless/careless/irresponsible drivers of both sexes !

I agree with Jim about the test totally unpreparing you for the real road. I think the test should be a stage thing and there should be restrictions as to what you can do/where you can drive before each stage. I think it's totally wrong that someone who has been learning for a long period of time within a mostly 30mph zone should be allowed straight onto a motorway with three lanes of extremely fast traffic weaving in and out of each other .... specially the way men drive at 100mph and right on someones bumper :p ... I am leaving my ansamachne on now.. for the forseeable lol
