todd They only do "Everyday Lite" & "Unlimited" now and of course the Connect.

Check this out for info on your exchange

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

Really can make a difference as there as so many things that can affect your speeds but distance from the exchange can be a big one.

Looks like all I have available in the area is:
* BT Wholesale ADSL
* BT Wholesale ADSL Max
* TalkTalk (CPW) LLU

Also states "However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection." Huh

IS 200 Sport with a few mods, Standardish IS-F. The IS250 SE-L with a few mods has gone to a new home.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Valid point, guess it shows how out of date I am with the products :lol: Been a year or more since I worked on that project... Though I am fairly sure that the reference data in most of the test DBs (and pretty much all the staff :lolSmile I have access to still refer to Connect, Base, Mid and Max rather than their pretty new "Marketing" names :biggrin:

Sky does do its best but Virgin is AFAIK currently the fastest provider going and I don't think it's likely to change too soon...

That's just because you already have ADSL enabled on your line. It will just get moved to whoever your new provider is.

From what you've described, it doesn't sound like BT is throttling your line. ADSL runs a continual learning process - all lines start off at full speed and over time your phone line is monitored for interference, sound quality etc. This builds up a thing called a BRAS profile which dictates what speed your line can support reliably. It sounds to me like you've got a **** phone line so you are ending up with a slow BRAS profile because your line can't support high speeds. This is especially common with overhead phonelines. All BT are doing (by the sounds of it) is telling the exchange to 'relearn' your line, so it starts off at full speed again and over time slows down.

O2, Sky, Talk Talk, can only get around the problems inherent in BT telephone lines and provide you with a better service (bar customer support which just seems to be terrible everywhere) if the SamKnows site indicates that they have equipment in your local exchange (i.e. exchange is LLU/unbundled). Otherwise they will be just as ****.

I've heard O2 are ok. Personally been with Virgin for years and the service is great - pay for 10meg and pretty much all the time 10meg is what I get. If you can get it in your area it's worth looking into Smile

Been with Virgin for a few years now Terry, never had any serious problems but you do need to keep an eye on the bills, ours are usually wrong so have to ring them to put it right? :Chair:

:offtopic: Yours son's only up the road from me then mate, if he's in Stafford Smile
