Phil01 Well if Android keeps on bringing out latest versions and constant upgrades then surely it aint that good is it????
If I had to constantly await v1xxxx then v2xxxxx and all the alphabet numbers in between I would ditch that os and go to something more stable.

Slightly odd statement isn't it? Because something that didn't need updates would be perfect.........:whistling:

Android isn't changing that fast itself, generally about once every 9-12 months - there was 2.1 towards the end of last year, 2.2 came a few months ago, and 3.0 will probably come some point in 2011.

And secondly the one that changes more often is better in my book, means it's constantly evolving as more and more new functionality is developed and added.

They all do it though, not just google - the current iOS was only launched a few months ago (iOS 4.1), iOS 4.2 is currently in development and in its third beta stage.........

The OS is perfectly stable - but as Dan correctly says improvements are always coming. The last thing you wane is a manufacturer to sit back and say their CS is perfect and doesn't need anything else?

Also worth pointing out seeing as we're probably talking about the iPhone, is that since June the iPhone4 has been through the following:

iOS 4.0
iOS 4.0.1
iOS 4.0.2
iOS 4.1

And iOS 4.2 due to release in November.

That's 5 versions of the OS in under 6 months........

The point i am making is surely all the bugs and fixes should have been ironed out within a short period of launch, not a constant revamp, The talk of the release of Froyo is iminent, but already heard mention of "waiting for Gingerbread".
Or is it me???

Ok I think we've confused you a bit with all our chat, android 2.2 (froyo) has already been released, back in late June/early July. The talk of a Froyo launch being imminent is with reference to our particular handset. Unlike iOS and WP7 which are closed platforms, android is open so handset manufacturers are allowed to tinker with them and make it their own. This is the reason why despite offering the same underlying operating system, if you pick up an android handset from different manufacturers each one will look different.

Therefore what we are talking about in this thread is the 2.2 release for the Galaxy S - and the reason for all the different versions is Samsung working to iron out all the bugs in their own specific release, not in 2.2 itself. Android 3.0 (gingerbread) is a good few months away in my opinion, so based on the June release of 2.2 it will be almost a year before this becomes available.

The next thing to point out is that these are not ironing out bugs or issues, it's simply making it better. New features are added and the OS is optimised in different ways (the speed at which web pages are loaded in 2.2 is seriously quicker than 2.1 for example).

I just don't get the logic that everyone should just create one OS and then think "job done" and sit back...........just doesn't make any sense

Worth noting that the official Android releases follow the normal kind of schedule, Phil... Parthiban is getting a step ahead with what's essentially beta software (test versions of the next release made available to developers to work with)

Besides, Linux (which is what Android essentially runs on) is regularly improved/modified...

 about as often as Windows releases security patches...

well now running froyo and lag fix and must say it's a massive improvement over 2.1, feels a completely different phone.

Awesome, I love discovering all the new tweaks that are around - update the voice search too if you haven't already, it now has voice actions which is really cool (stuff like "navigate to leicester square")
