The nation paid its respects to the fallen at 11am to mark Armistice Day, including Prime Minister David Cameron who laid a wreath in South korea.
But remembrance events in London were marred by the gruesome spectacle of members of self-styled Muslims Against Crusades burning the symbol of the country's debt to its brave service men and women killed in action.
The sick protesters chanted "British soldiers burn in hell" and held banners saying "Islam will dominate" and "Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hell".
Amid outrageous scenes in Exhibition Road in West London's Kensington around 30 people gathered to disrupt services, while 50 counter demonstrators from the English Defence League assembled nearby.
Parents of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan branded the group "atrocious".
Christine Bonner, whose son Darren was killed by a landmine in Helmand province in 2007, said she could not believe what they were doing.
"I'm disgusted," she said.
"There are people like myself that at 11am today were remembering the lives of our children, and then there are some people doing something so hurtful as that. I think it's atrocious.
"We're talking about individuals who have died for their country."
Police attempted to keep the two sides apart. Three members of the protest group were arrested - two for alleged public order offences and one over claims he assaulted a police officer.
One officer was taken to hospital with a head injury as the groups clashed.
Muslims Against Crusades member Asad Ullah said: "We want the Government to pull the troops out from these countries and to stop interfering in our affairs."
SORRY
but im in the forces and i have had friends injured and one who lost his life to give freedom to those who dont have it.
im all for free speech but surely this is racial hatred.

But it doesn't explain how they got the banners in,after all they wouldn't just fit in a pocket now would they... football phone in show up here has had people raging about this since it happened... as banners are supposed to be checked by the club before they can be used for H&S reasons...
the Celtic thing is being investigated by the club, with a view to banning every one of those morons...

The banners by celtic, whilst not very tasteful in the slightest the words to me come across as more of an "opinion" than a "slur"
naturally not having lost anyone to war i can look at it a bit unbiased,
and if you read properly they state the conflicts ireland/iraq/afghanistan, which in all honesty we should never of set foot in
and if you look at the history the irish were never that bothered with us english until we took the stranglehold on their nation and then sent the troops in, what happened? terror attacks
the muslim extremists whilst active in the uk, but then we follow americas lead and invade irag and afghanistan and what do we get? bus's and trains blown apart
now if the banners had of included WW1 and WW2 were our independance and freedom really was at stake, then i would be totally opposed to those banners and the people holding them

yes people will argue that we shouldnt be in iraq, afgan and ireland and the only reason we went was because the USA told us to go (not ireland). but having first hand knowledge of iraq on 2 occations i can tell you that regardless of WMD's what we did for those people couldnt make me more proud to have done it.
the young children werent allowed to play football or they would have been whipped. it was banned along with alot of other sports most children worked 16-17hrs a day just so they can pay protection money to the police or army so there house wasnt looted.
we gave these people the power of free speech again and the ability to vote for there own leaders and not to be lead by a dictator.
