How to connect my home theater system?
How to connect my home theater system?
Straight to the point... this is how it's all connected at the moment, which means I only get 5.1 sound when using the Samsung DVD player.
The TV, the TViX and the Xbox 360 all have optical sound outputs and I suppose the optimal solution would be to connect them via toslink to the DVD player. Unfortunately the DVD player only has one optical sound input and it doesn't have an HDMI input.
Do I need to get a new reciever with a lot of inputs or can I just use one optical cable between the TV and the DVD player? I suppose I won't be able to play music from my TViX without having my TV switched on but I can live with that for a while. More importantly though, do I get 5.1 sound from i.e. the TViX if I connect it that way? (TViX ---> TV ---> DVD player).
if your tv has an optical out then use this like i do. but you will need a new tv with 3 hdmi.
i conect a blueray dvd player and ps3 and digital tv via hdmi and a wii via composits and then take the sound out and back to the dvd with 5.1 via opticial so that i can have sound 5.1 from them all but i have to find a tv with in and out opticial and there are not to many of them. samsung plasma do a few
If the TV has an optical output can you not just plug that into the dvd player? Or does it not work as a passthrough and only outputs sound from the TV but not from external sources?
The best (but very expensive) solution is to get another receiver, put everything into that with one video output to TV and one sound output to the DVD player.
The cheap solution is to get a manual optical switcher, only annoyance being that you'd have to get up and switch it everytime:

Something like this would also work at reasonable cost:

TV optical outs don't tend to pass through the 5.1 sound.
The way around this problem is as Parthiban had pointed out an external switching box that does all the work for you. I have an auto switching box and it works very well, I also have an auto switching HDMI box 3 HDMI inputs just aint enough:biggrin:
I bought an optical cable that I connected from the TV to the DVD player/reciever but the result isn't really what I was looking for.
The sound coming from my speakers is now delayed by almost half a second which is very annoying. I decided to go for a new proper reciever but I can't find one that isn't too tall. It can't be taller/thicker than 115mm so I'm kind of stuck :tongue_smilie:
Are there maybe Bly-ray players with at least three HDMI inputs and one output?
