Toyota Supra 1979-2002
The Toyota Supra is a two-seat sports car made by Toyota between 1979 and 2002. The first and second generation cars were derived from the Toyota Celica but was wider and longer that the Celica. By the third generation, Toyota started to differentiate the Supra from the Celica. All four generations have used six cylinder in-line engines. The Supra remains an icon, with appearances in various video games like Need For Speed and Gran Turismo, and movies like The Fast and The Furious which released in 2001. The fourth generation Supra, with the twin turbo engine is the most popular one in its range, and still has a cult following.
The twin-turbo engine came along with the fourth generation Supra that was in production between 1992 and 2002. Code named as 2JZ-GTE, the engine makes 276 horsepower in the Japanese version of the car (in keeping with the gentleman’s agreement in Japan to limit the maximum power of a car to 276 horsepower) and 320 horsepower and 315 feet pound of torque in the American markets. The car could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in as low as 4.6 seconds and does a standing quarter mile in just 13.1 seconds, at 109 mph. The car was capable of reaching a speed of 175 mph, but was limited to 155 mph in most of the markets. The main reason for this performance was the sequential twin-turbo chargers, which worked in tandem to reduce the turbo lag. The car had large wheels with extremely capable brakes, resulting in a 0 to 70 mph braking distance of just 149 feet.
