purplewitch Mental Witch ???? seems i will be spending my weekend practising squishing MR2's with country accents into my cauldron !

Unfortunately for me, I wasn't born in Devon. I do however have a country accent - Black Country!!

No gift of a magic spell to sort my problems out then?

The taps are interchangeable - careful swapping them there is a really tiny o-ring in there too.

I don't think it is related unless it leaks when it's done up tight.

I've been looking at other threads on different mr2 websites, to try and find what the problem is with my car.
Some say the pipes deteriorate and start to leak behind the fuel tank (when I had the MOT just done, one of the notes said I had a slight coolant leak, but this may have been me filling the system and spilling it over the engine)
Some say that when the head gasket is on its way out; driving 'under boost' blows exhaust gases through the gasket into the coolant creating higher pressure which then blows the coolant out of the expansion tank. This last comment is concerning me coz I keep loosing the coolant through my expansion tank.
I was sure the head gasket was OK cos there was no oil in the coolant or water in the oil that I could see, but now i'm not too sure!
Are there any other ways to tell if the head gasket is at fault?
Any more ideas guys, i'm running out of time and money.
Thanks again for everyones suggestions so far!

A garage can perform the sniffer test, basicly a chemical that detects exhaust deposits in your coolant. They can also pressure test the cooling system to find leaks.

That'll be my next thing to do. Can't spend any more money or time on the car for a while now, so i'll have another go in about a month. When/if I find the problem I'll update this thread, just in case someone else has the same problem!
Thanks OUTLAWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only other thing I would do is get the car on stands, take all the undertrays off, and then run it up to temperature. It should make it really obvious if you have a leak as you will get a wet patch under the car. This would allow you to diagnose the so called pipes from hell, the leaky heater hoses.

You could also try pulling the EFI fuse, taking the radiator cap off and having someone try and start the car for 5 seconds or so. It won't start without the EFI fuse, but it will crank and turn over. If the coolant under the rad cap moves violently then you're pressurising the coolant, and your headgasket has failed.

Rev1 and rev2 turbos have quite weak head gaskets, they're only oldschool paper ones. If you need to replace then replace with a rev3+ one, they fit without modification and are MLS gaskets instead. I'm loathe to diagnose HG failure straight away though as it's quite a complex cooling system and it can generate HG failure symptoms, you spend all the time and money getting the HG replaced only for it to blow again because the fault lies elsewhere.

Thanks again Toxo.
I AM GUTTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got the local MOT place to put their exhaust sensor over the rad. cap opening; it showed over 100 hydro-carbons - the head gasket has gone - bummer!
My advice for anyone who is buying a car, especially an Mr2 Turbo is to take it to an MOT test center and have them test for exhaust fumes in the cooling system before parting with any cash. If I had done that I'd have walked away, or knocked the price right down.
Next 'very small, easy and cheap job' (sarcasm is the highest form of whit in my opinion) is to drop the whole engine change the head gasket, replace the radiator (just in case that was the initial reason for overheating), make sure every coolant pipe is unblocked, renew the coolant once more then get a re-mortgage!!
Have a very nice weekend everyone, I'm off to get bladdered!!
