So I've got my Apexi Neo all installed and configured with a ~4% lean tune across the board. Obviously it's not ideal, especially when many people are reporting that the IS300 can be leaned out by 7-10%.

Question is...

Do I buy a wideband for about £150, have it welded into the downpide for £20, and then do all the tuning myself on an industrial estate late at night Wink

Or do I take it to a pro place and get them to do it? I've no idea how much this option normally costs?

One thing that may have a bearing on the answer is that I'm putting some $$ aside for a supercharger for the 300. I'm hoping that I can install it myself - or with help from friends (as I certainly wont be paying garage prices), and at least if I've got a wideband already installed, I'll have an idea of whats going on.

Considering the damage a badly running engine can do and the costs involved in correcting it all later, the only question surely is do you know as much if not more than a quality pro tuner ?
Personally I see no point whatsoever on spending a penny on flashy performance kit if you don't make the investment to protect it all for the long term.

How much should i expect to pay for a pro tune with the car in its current N/A state?

Yeah I see your point, and I'll definitely go that way after going forced induction. But just while I'm on N/A, I don't think it would be a 'massive' deal to do a conservative tune myself? I mean, its just a case of datalogging the AFR across a series of runs. Looking what RPM's its running lean/rich. Then just make small adjustments to even them out. It's not like I'd be dialing in -50% on the NEO and watching the engine blow up.

The real cruz of my situation is, in say 6 months time I will have a supercharger kit. The kit will have been on an IS300 in the past, and it will come with a piggyback ECU which will already be tuned for an IS300. Now I know that no two cars are the same and environment as much as the car affects the tune, so this is the reason for me wondering if I should install a wideband now so I can kill two birds with one stone? Basically, on the first crank of the enginewith the S/C installed I want to know if the tune on the pigyback is safe to use the car at all, or if it need to go on a flatbed down to the tuners.

Just emailed a local tuning place, and f*k were they about as useful as a chocolate teapot!

Me: Hi, Can you tune an Apexi Neo I've got fitted to my car.
Them: We can supply and fit a UniChip for £475
Me: Already got the Neo as a stopgap solution until I S/C. Can you tune it?
Them: Yes we can, but the Unichip can be remapped when you supercharge. For £475 total.
Me: I'll be getting a GReddy Emanage with my S/C, so I dont want to buy anything else. How much to map the NEO which is installed in my car already.
Them: We cant give you a price.

WTF, just WTF.

how can you run a company and not know your prices?

I just emailed them this:

jim Does that mean you can't tune it, don't want to tune it, or don't know how long it would take to tune - and thus can't quote a price based on cost per hour * number of hours?

A simple answer without trying to sell me a Unichip would be cool. I just want to find out if I can get it done locally or if I need to drive down to TDI / AMD in Thurrock.

Kindest Regards

and got this back....

them I’m sorry but we do not want to tune it.

Thanks for wasting my time butholes.

Be nice to say that from the start. I am sure you would have bought Moleys Unichip had you wanted to go down that route.

Yeah, exactly. Funny thing was they said this at first:

"We can tune it that’s not a problem but after speaking to my boss he highly recommends using the unichip"

Of course he bluddy does, probably because you've got stockpiles of them out back.

Anyway, back on track. Anybody know any good and reasonably priced tuners in Essex? I've no idea how much a tune costs. But if its more than a £300 I'll just go the wideband route I think. Who knows, I might even learn something in the process.
