Moody night shots?
Moody night shots?
What are generally the best settings on a DSLR for capturing the moody night time shots? I've only ever used my DSLR to take product shots before (stuff on pure white backgrounds etc).
I had a go earlier down the local car park, but couldn't hang round long enough to play as people were giving me and my tripod weird looks

Both of these were taken with a 5sec shutter speed iirc. Meh tbh.

For example I set mine the ISO 800 shutter speed to 30 seconds and 5.6 wide on the lens and get great pics of stars for a car I would set it maybe to 15secs on the shutter and see how u get on.
To be honest I learnt through trial and error mate but u can get some amazing shots

I've got a Canon 1000D with a Sigma 17-70mm lens (and also the stock Canon one). I've also got a tripod which I used for the shots above, but from what you guys have said I probably didn't have the shutter open long enough to get a good shot.
Also my surroundings were cr@p

Like I said trial and error is the best way
It sounds like you have all the kit you need so just have a play with the settings
As long as there's some sort of light mate u should be fine just adjust shutter speed

Turn on the camera and place your subject /car in the most lit place that is still acceptable to your composition.

Set the camera to manual shooting mode by turning the dial on top to "M".

Increase the ISO to the highest possible rating by holding the "ISO" button on top of the camera and rotating the dial next to it.

Open the aperture all the way by holding down the "Av" button, then rotating the dial on top of the camera to the left.

Rotate the dial on top of the camera (by itself) to change the shutter speed. As you do this, look through the viewfinder and place the exposure indicator in the middle of the meter.

Press the shutter button partially to gain focus, then fully to take the picture.

Review the image. If it is too blurry, increase the shutter speed. If it too dark, decrease the shutter speed. If it is too bright, decrease the shutter speed, or change the ISO to the next highest setting and repeat the process.
