Sparkystav Must say i think its time the "monster" needs to be renamed. IMHO. It never appeared to be the car it wanted to be, and i think Daves is a far superior (and possibly faster) car.

Maybe it wasn't before, but SPC Horsham say they've got it running significantly better now (e.g. much more bhp on the dyno).

I'd be amazed if Dave's car was faster.

As for the current state of the bodywork etc, doesn't that just reflect it's in drift action quite a lot this season ? Lots/most/all of the other cars will have bodywork scrapes etc.

Marsdendean What is in the monsters car? I know its been built for drifting but ive never really know - and whats in daves?

The Monster has a Supra engine, 2JZ-GTE. Dave Ellen's car has a 1G-FE with SPC Horsham's big valve head, new camshafts, forged pistons and rods, and a big single turbo. Dave's car is going to be getting a new strengthened block with enlarged sump etc.

The Monster wasnt built for drifting, it just ended up like that.
Rumour has it it never produced the power it was meant to when TDi did the work but AFAIK there was never any Dynos made public to prove/disprove it.

SPC say that about "the monster"? fair enough. is there any graphs or anything for it?

Dunno. I'm just going by what the SPC guys said verbally, e.g. at Japfest. They reckon they've got it to run a lot better than in its time as a TDi car, and of course they have their own dyno (I've not personally seen graphs though).

Any of the SPC guys on here like to comment ?

I asked Wayne from SPC Horsham about the Monster, and he said that the windscreen problem was caused by the bonnet flying open at Lydden Hill and cracking it.

As for the bhp, when SPC first got hold of it, it made 385 at 1.6 bar but 411 at 1.2 bar (lower boost !). After they re-mapped it, it now makes 560 bhp at 1.2 bar, and they do have the dyno sheets for this.

Obviously they're going to be doing a lot of work on Dave's car, but right now it's not as quick as the Monster (but then that's a 2 litre engine compared to a 3 litre one).

Marsdendean Is dave's car the Aztec colour one (bandits old one?) Is it more expensive to go down the route with SPC rather than an engine swap?
No, SPC are using Bandit's old Aztec Fire IS200 as a project car to test things out. Dave's car is a black one, pics below.

As for the cost, well, depends on how much the engine swap will cost, and how much power you're after. But both routes will cost you a lot of ££££.

As an example, here are some of the prices of the bits that SPC Horsham sell (eBay shop here) :

Turbo manifold - £795
Big sump - £210
Big valve kit - £495
Piston and rod kit - £1,560

This doesn't include the new head, new camshafts, block strengthening plate, turbo, ECU, pipework, mapping, installation, etc, etc.

Matt took me out once in the Monster over in Germany a few years ago now, and even then it was much quicker than my Aristo is now so God knows what it's like now it's pushing the figures it always should have been.

The main problem is getting the weight down as the IS chassis is quite light at the back compared to the Supra or even the Aristo, but when it picked up it absolutely flew!
