Not sure if people are aware of this but thought I'd bring it up just in case as it's one you could get sucked into if not paying attention.

Parents got a call yesterday from someone claiming to be from a fraud investigation team at Barclays saying that 4 of their credit cards had been used fraudulently at Argos and Selfridges (and even knew the banks the credit cards were from, although perhaps info not that hard to get hold of).

He said the cards had been blocked and he was going to send a courier to pick the cards up - luckily my mum rang me while my dad was on the phone to him and this rang serious alarm bells with me so I told them to stop talking to him and don't give him any info.

Then told them to call all the banks and none of them had any idea of any fraudulent activity and the cards are not blocked, and a quick google of the guys name (Peter Mackelwealth) proved that this is an ongoing scam.

Bit angry about the whole thing as I can't imagine how many could easily get scammed, does anyone know who this sort of thing should be reported to? All the banks have been informed, and we rang our local police station to report it too but they didn't seem particularly interested.

Having it in the school curriculum probably wouldn't help people like Parthiban's parents though...

It's very easy to scam people if you can just give them enough double talk that sounds reasonable enough, and these people are good at that. I'll be warning my parents as well. Thanks for the heads up mate.

we play the "how long can you get them to stay on hold" game, best was a water cooler sales person we left on hold for 23mins before they hung up, while we got on with our jobs of stabbing people. Best thing is we don't press hold just leave the phone on the desk and chat about them so they can hear!!

well it would because if parents dont know, then the kids can warn them....as Parti has done

I stil cant believe this scam works,

First thing i would do is say "so if i check my statements then i will notice these charges?", then i would actually check the statements

Most people bank online nowadays, dead easy to check

I cant see why you would jsut hand it over and not ask questions........

Nah. Most parents tend not to take financial advice/suggestions from their school age kids... It's worth doing, if only so that the generation growing into the credit world are aware of what's going on though.

My parents for example were a bit worried as they had a call from Microsoft advising that their computer had contacted them through the internet to advise that it had contracted a couple of viruses. Would they like to purchase some software that would clean the infections out?

She didn't know any better, and the bloke used enough technical terms to confuse her, presumably along the same lines as the credit card guy, so that to her he sounded genuine. Fortunately, I came in as she was on the phone to them, and she handed the call over to me before she had got to the point of giving payment details or anything. I asked him what the problem apparently was with the PC, then ripped everything he said to shreds by pointing out that not only would her PC not just "phone home" without any prompting to the user (as Windows doesn't do that), but also that it certainly wouldn't call Microsoft. As it runs on Linux.

At which point the scamming ****** got both barrels unleashed on them.

:Overkill:

Bear in mind a lot of people (especially the older ones) are less likely to question a figure of apparent authority like a bank or whatever. It's why the bogus gas fitters etc prey on the elderly, as the younger members of the community would be more likely to question them...
