TTE black boxes
Now I'm currently working on nine more BBs. Stian from Norway has dibs on one of them. Is anyone else interested?
I'm going to make them anyway so you know who's got a few if your TTE BB breaks or if you want to replace your HKS FCD.

Now I'm currently working on nine more BBs. Stian from Norway has dibs on one of them. Is anyone else interested?
I'm going to make them anyway so you know who's got a few if your TTE BB breaks or if you want to replace your HKS FCD.

Not sure if all supercharged IS200s behave the same way with the FCD, but at least some do. When you give your car full throttle at under 3000rpm the engine feels choked and it sometimes judders depending on what setting your FCD is on.
Stav explained it really well a couple of years ago.
Sparkystav The FCD works by taking the input and only sending out a percentage of that figure back out to the ECU. Depending on what number you have it on. (the lower the number the lower the percentage). So you have to make sure the output at full boost is lower than the fuel cut voltage. But obviously your putting less air flow through the range so the ECU sends out less fuel than needed for the actual air amount right through the range. Not enough to cause the engine to go bang obviously but a lower AFR non the less.
The TTE black box on the other hand is pre set. It tops out the figure at the fuel cut (4.34v, on a 0-5v range incidentally) so at that figure it just sends out the same airflow signal to the ECU regardless. But there isnt a lot of range above that with the standard setup so its not too lean.
But heres the difference. Going up the range the TTE box actually sends out a HIGHER airflow to the ECU so it causes the ecu to send MORE fuel out, giving you a better AFR and maybe even some more power.
Hope this helps you understand. While the FCD does the job, its not a perfect replacement for the TTE black box.

02-05-2018, 10:08 PM #3I'm thinking around £70 each, that's about as much as the cheapest FCD on Ebay right now. The components are really cheap, but it takes some time putting everything together.

I think I've still got one of those black boxes sat in a jiffy bag somewhere, it was brand new from TTE years ago, they sent it me when I was having issues but that was around the time Gord took me up to Steve's place for the first time and they sorted it all out

Having looked into this problem quite a lot it seems the fuelling for the IS200 has a very fine margin when it comes to the fuelling. Unfortuantely the symptoms of the problem are quite annoying as it feels like the traction control is kicking in (seeing as that is injector cut anyway). For example the problem is much worse when the engine is cold than when it is warmed up fully.
If you were to run the supercharger on an otherwise standard IS200 I dont think this problem would occur but with every mod: air filter, exhaust system etc... all increase to the airflow and hence need extra fuelling to compensate. The more air you pump through the engine the larger amount of fuel is taken away by the FCD as it is a percentage.
The problem is noone is going to shell out over £2k for a supercharger kit without having modified their car first. What people really need is a piggyback ECU and I believe this will give noticable gains (10% ish). The Blackbox and FCD are really only bodge jobs so the kit can be called Bolt On.
However Patrick replacement Blackboxes are needed as not many can justify the cost of fitting and mapping an ECU for the charger.
