why have you got "You pluck the day" written on you?

The film, Dead poets Society has a lot to answer for with its inaccurate translations!! Amazing how wrong translations make it into modern society.

"Carpe", does not come from the Latin word "Capio", which means to seize. It comes from the Latin word "carpo", which means to pluck.

Carpe is the second person singular command form of carpo, meaning essentially, "You, pluck!"

Diem is the English Objective case for day, meaning that it is the object of the verb carpo. So in effect, the saying really means, "You [there], pluck the day!".

Oh the joy of Latin.

2tongues why have you got "You pluck the day" written on you?

Oh the joy of Latin.

only a select few will know that, so therefore it makes no odds to me Smile

despite that you are "officially" correct, many latin words and phrases can be translated in multipe ways, for as I did not take the phrase from the robin williams film, i didnt see the film until well after the tattoo, i fodun the phrase via google,

Carpe diem is a phrase from a Latin poem by Horace that has become an aphorism. It is popularly translated as "seize the day". Carpe literally means "to pick, pluck, pluck off, cull, crop, gather", but Ovid used the word in the sense of, "To enjoy, seize, use, make use of".

In Horace, the phrase is part of the longer Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero – "Seize the Day, putting as little trust as possible in the future", and the ode says that the future is unforeseen, and that instead one should scale back one's hopes to a brief future, and drink one's wine. This phrase is usually understood against Horace's Epicurean background

Love a good tat thread Big Grin

Here's my jap calf wrap so far - very nearly done, all in black shading Smile

Just need the tiger finishing and loads more background done.

Consists of a tiger, samurai, koi and a hannya mask.

Benefits of having a mate that is not only a first class tattooist, but has his own shop too!
