Is anyone on here running an oil catch can on their boosted setup? I'm tempted to get one but want to make sure its worthwhile before I do.

Those that are runnign one, whats your engine, boost levels and how much oil are you seeing?

Gord Had one fitted on my supercharged is200, don't remember seeing any oil of any great volumes to be honest, if i did i would of had a problem :w00t: more for show really Big Grin

I don't really know when it flips from being 'for show' to a necessity, as I heard that once you start hitting high boost levels you tend to get a lot of oil vapors escaping through the PCV on the intake cam side?

I _think_ that if your car is boosted from factory then the PCV is configured differently to that of a car that comes N/A from factory. However, when you boost an N/A car there becomes a potential need for a catch can as you're likely to see more blow-by (oil, petrol, other ****) coming out.

Normally it would go into the intake and be burned which is OK-ish, but because N/A boosted cars produce more, its best to have the catch can 'catch' it all so you dont end up gunking everything up.


This is just what I've cobbled together in my head from various sources though, so I could be wrong

I think you are about right. It's just I was always told it was a tiny amount of oil we are talking about, and chucking it back in induction was doing no harm whatsoever. My (This advice may have been specific to a TTE charged 200.)

However, I think the answer is... If it concerns you at all, then get one! They are pretty cheap (in the grand scheme of things.)

I do have one yes, tend to get a little oil in there but not huge amounts.

i fitted one cause i originally just had a filter on the breather hole but noticed oil coming out through the filter and just made the cam covers look messy.

PCV systems tend to be the same NA to forced induction, but FI cars have a 1-way valve in 1 of the vents. This prevents boost pressure from going back into the crankcase via the PCV. Most N/A Toyota engines have this as well (small 90 degree plastic bend, usually either purple or green). You should have a catch can on any forced induction motor. My car has one as standard for example Wink

Don't know the ins and outs of the 2JZ engine WRT to catch cans so can't help you there. I would double check before connecting the 2 PCVs together though.

Don't bother venting it back into the air intake, just stick a small breather on the end.

What's way more important than brand is making sure the fittings on the can and hoses are big enough. Lots of eBay specials come with tiny little fittings (5/6mm ID) which is nowhere near big enough especially with forced induction and ends up providing back pressure to the PCV system. The first you know about this (if you're lucky) is that it pushes your dipstick out... if you're unlucky then it can be way worse!
