Smoking habit
Smoking habit
Hi guys,
My IS200 has a nasty habit of letting out a puff of smoke after being sat for a while. When driving around (and nailing it to redline) there is no smoke at all, but after it has been sat without starting for a day or so, there is a puff on startup.
Any suggestions what it could be?
Thanks!
what colour is the smoke? blue or grey?
ian you beat me to it
Blue - definately oil.
I'll be honest I have done a little research already and found it may be either valve stem seals or PCV valve.
Wouldn't a valve stem seal problem manifest itself more often than just a cold start?
Have you checked your oil dipstick level first, could it have to much oil in?
If it is blue, that is oil in the combustion chamber. a head gasket could do that in the right situation but so could a failed valve stem guide/seal.
Take the oil cap off and see if the underneath is clean also check the water bottle either could have sludge in this would point more to a gasket.
Thanks guys - will give all suggestions a bash.
If the coolant / oil cap is clean and the oil levels are good - would disconnecting the PCV overnight after a drive prove / disprove that it is the valve stems?
I guess if the head will have to come off for the valve stem seals to be replaced, may as well do the head gasket at the same time.
Give the pcv a good spray with carb cleaner, then an oil change, might be worth trying a different brand of oil.
I would do these simple tasks before I start to worry.
I had this once on a old Carina, if i parked downhill it would start up with a puff, if I parked uphil no problem.
Sometimes it is easier to leave things as they are, what harm is one little little puff causing? think of the expense and other problems you could cause.
Have a look here mate.......as you may already know outlaws do ramble on, so to save you time read post 1 and 20 ...... no need to worry!
