Ok, here goes: been driving in 6th gear on a motorway, when out of a sudden heard a wee pop sound and after that car just lost power. Engine is running alright, but sticking into gears doesnt do anything at all. RAC been to attend, suggested it might be prop-shaft, after a lot of thinking, I also thought it might be clutch bearing or smth like that.

If it is a prop shaft, what kind a price I am looking for repairs? and what else can it be? Engine runs fine. but when I stopped, there was a dodgy smell, something like burnt oil, so at first I thought it might be smth major.

Car is in the garage now, so will see what will they tell me

Hmm, the engine light doesnt generally come on for anything other than the engine.

you need to get the codes from the ECU to be sure.

to check why not put the car on axles stands and CAREFULLY put the car in gear, see what spins

The ECU light was on before it happened (Lambda sensor if you remember Stav) and RAC guy done that, saying PropShaft is not spinning.

is300_dino, that's a good note, I was actually thinking of £300-500 just for prop-shaft, with a wee L on it...

It wasnt my prop shaft that went Dinho.

Firstly i'd hope not as its a custom one, it was the half shaft from the diff to the driveshaft

If the props def not spinning then got to be gearbox related, sorry about my earlier comments, read "engine light on" instead of "engine running alright"

First thing is to get the gearbox off, Clutch bearing wont cause it as that wont cause you to lose power itll just whine then fail and you wont be able to change gear.

could be something random like the clutch plate shearing from the centre spline?
but like i said if the engine spins and the prop doesnt its got to be clutch to gearbox really.
Cant remember if theres any sort of inspection hole on the bellhousing. Otherwise you could get it on a ramp, put it in gear then look inside and see if the clutch is spinning the geabox shaft.

I had some squeking noises when depressing the clutch before, and usual juddering on 1st and 2nd gears.

The strangest thing is, it happened whilst driving steady, not changing gears or accelerating. At first I thought my cambelt snapped (as it is due to be changed around this mileage)

so I'm both happy and gutted at the same time

Sounds to me like a blown clutch plate. This could be a simple fix, or a nightmare. It will be hard to tell till its all apart though. Hopefully it wont have caused damage to the gearbox casing or flywheel. Do these have dual mass flywheels fitted? That could always be an issue, an expensive one at that

Is there a solid flywheel option available, or will that be heading to lightened fly territory?
