2012 MOT regulations.
2012 MOT regulations.
I can't see how they are going to check all these new things I.e wiring looms and the such an mot will take twice as long which means less work they can do in a day which means less money.
Things like self leveling lights and HIDs I can understand but how are they going to know ur car has been remapped.
ormi thats not true....your mot cert is basically valid till you drive out of the garage doors.....the only thing you have come back on is corrosion..
as for you must fail so many thats poop too..take me for instance i work for a main dealer and have been moting for approx 5 years now and on a guestamit ive passed 40 times more cars than i have failed....
but you do get monitored on what you fail things for ie in a month you fail 100 cars for handbrakes with too much reserve and the national average is 20 the boss will get an email asking why and if an answer isnt to their satisfaction they will pop in and check you over..

That's for a dealer, you work as a "one man band mechanic" and you get monitored on different things. He's been doing it for 20+ years and has been looking after my family for most of those, so he wouldn't lie to me, he has no reason to.
Essentially if he passed every car that came through the door (i.e. your typical dodgy tester) then he'd get checked, if your car is found to have faults which are deemed DID/SHOULD/COULD have existed 30 days ago when your MOT cert was issued, then questions ARE asked and the tester specifically IS questioned.
It makes good sense too, if you get pulled up 20 days after your test and you have suspension that's quite clearly leaking and obviously has been for some time........ or your tyres have threads showing........ or as you suggest, corrosion is found....... there are all sorts of reasons for this to happen and it is far from "thats not true....".
It does make me thank the lord I now reside in Arizona, I can do whatever I want to the car so long as it passes emission test once a year. I so hope the next visa is granted to enable me to stay here otherwise its back to Blighty:mellow:
My boss used to live in Arizona and all he did was complain about the ****** DMV, lol.
So far the DMV has been good to us. They waved the $30 licence fee and let us both register and take all the tests for $10.
There are 30+ DMV buildings in and around Phoenix city's, so it will vary greatly between places.
Not sure if this helps with the new regulations, this is the pdf version of the MOT testers manual, the appendix A and B is for future use, looks to me like the 2012 regulations, it may help to workout if your mods will get past the new MOT.

but that wont work either lets say your a boy racer and you have blacked out lights running 30 inch wheels bald from all your burn outs and rubbing on the arches and overly tinted head lights and a exhaust that sticks 3 feet out the back with a decat then it comes mot time you remove all your mods and put back to standard boom you pass you then go home and put all your mods back on and 4 days later you get stopped.......so what your saying/mot boy is saying is the mot boy will get into trouble....
also the qota from dealership to mr one man band is the same...
No that's not what I said, I never said they would get in trouble, I said questions would be asked. Obviously if they go to the MOT tester and say "He's got 30" rims and a paintcan exhaust, etc." then the tester says "Nope, was standard when it came in" blah blah. And no, dealers and big chains are not treated the same as one man bands, not in the slightest. For one thing from what I've seen, VOSA inspectors seem to be far more lenient to one man bands about their equipment, where as big chains tend to get more scrutinised, they have more money and should have better facilities, with less excuses as to why their equipment isn't up to scratch etc.
Funny you mention that scenario, a friend of mine in Finland used to have to do that with his MX6, he had it lowered, aftermarket exhaust, bigger alloys, he even had two engines, a super charged one and a normal one, because come MOT time (Or their equivalent) it HAD to be standard. I don't know if the rules are still the same in Finland or have gotten any better, but back in 2000 when I was talking to him about it, the car HAD to be standard to get through the MOT. This is one of the reasons I'm concerned about this information, because it's already standard practice in Finland and possibly a few other places in Europe too, so in Brussels they see no problem with it.
Many EC countries have strict rules over and above the UK's - Germany and Sweden for instance.
Remember though there is a penalty point category called "Use and Construction of a Road Vehicle" and ANYTHING that would fail an MOT i.e. illegal mods, emissions etc can at any-time can be prosecuted for under that offence. I discovered this one when I got 3 points, a court visit and a fine for having an empty front washer bottle - the judge spelt it our very clearly as I was a new driver back then.
You will find that the new rules will be written in such a way that a standard car will pass without an issue - and only cars that are away from manufacturers specification will be in trouble, therefore its not a retrospective law change in the eyes of law - they do not see modifications as relevant as it is a relatively small percentage of people that modify their cars, unlike the road tax fiasco which was a retrospective tax hike - which is why the EU court saved us from that tax hike - so their not all bad, just mostly.
