Sam, you have a good point regards the friendly MOT garage and I am speaking to them today about this.
I did look at everything myself while the MOT was been done and they showed me where there was a bit of age, wear etc, but nothing needed to be replaced on the suspension.
The suggestion of an independant MOT station that just does MOT's only is a good one and I willl see what my neighbour wants to do herself. As you can imagine she is just so relieved and was quiet tearful, not with joy of the saving, but about the fact she could have so easily been ripped off.

Indeed - I edited my original point, but agree with Toxo's post 100%
Did the first garage actually fail the car on the expensive part or did they just suggest that as acouple of bushes needed replacing that they might as well do the lot.
Now that the MOT test is 'electronic' I thought that if your car has failed and you decide to take it to a second garage the second garage will see the details of the failure and in this case I would have thought that they would have queried this with you.
As has already been said the MOT test is still very much subjective and down to each examiner but with the new system I think it is easier for them to see any previous failures and advisories.
