This is one for the Toyota/Lexus techs.

Was the clutch that was fitted in the 99 model upgraded or changed around 02/03?

If so what type/make is the new clutch?

Yes, the friction plate and release bearing were revised.
31230 BEARING ASSY, CLUTCH RELEASE
31230-53021 (01/1999 - 03/2003)
31230-53022 (04/2003 - 06/2005)

31250 DISC ASSY, CLUTCH
31250-53011 (01/1999 - 04/1999)
31250-53012 (05/1999 - 07/2002)
31250-53030 (08/2002 - )

Can't advise on manufacturer, though.
