Hi Guys,

Not having luck at all.

I went for a Job within the same department i work for with higher pay.

On Friday the manager told me I was unsuccessful.

Among all the other retteric he was giving me, he also said:

"if you made yourself more indispensable to Histology, days and weeks before the interview, you would have stood a chance"

So does this bascially mean, lick they backsides before hand?

My colleague who also applied and got the job, had the oppurtunity to basically do this and she got the job.

What do you think, As its the NHS, they got proper procedures, and have requested recuitment to provide the application pack for my interview.

I have also mentioned the above in an email to them which i am waiting a reply for.

Hi Guys,

I was under the impression that with sectors like NHS, council jobs etc. they have very strict guidelines on why they should or should not hire someone. And as far as I understand they can pretty much only base their decision on distance from the job, transport to and from the premises, and whether or not you can actually do it or not.

Basically saying you didn't get the job because you didn't do enough ass kissing in the run up to the interview sounds like clear favouritism to me.

Yes you are right.

I was on a equality and diversity workshop curtesy of the NHS.

And they made it clear, that during an application they decision can only be based on the application and the interview not your past history if any with them.

Yes you are right.

In my opinion it doesnt matter how many guideline you put in place, if you have an interview its conducted by a human being who will always be swayed either by the actions on the day or previous knowledge.

If the guidelines are so strict they'll be no need for an interview it'd be automatic

I'm with Stav on this, it's not possible to discount your first impressions or personal history with someone and this will always colour someone's opinion come interview time.

Have to agree with the above my friend. Its the same in every job every boss will have there own veiw on people and hold others in a higher regard.

Unlucky about the job but don't let it annoy you

I have to agree with the others on this too, I obviously don't know all the details but if there are two very similar people going for the same job, and are generally indistinguishable, if one goes out of their way to assist that department that will sway their decision.

Again I don't know the full situation so please let me know if I've missed the point, but placing yourself in the manager's shoes, how would you have decided between the two if on paper you were both identical?

As Pat says, no point dwelling on stuff like this, use it as ammunition to get it right when the next opportunity comes along - hard luck with this one but there's probably something better round the corner Smile

Stuff them mate go some where else and when they ask why you are leaving just say I am not just go sit here for the rest of my life cause I will not compromise my principals and sell myself short. I get sick and tired of people you get very good jobs who are utterly useless at them and the capable people get over looked just because the don have a nose as brow as he previous candidate although the skill level difference is massive. My option would be become a very integral part of your current department, get as much training from the company as you can then seek better opportunities and when the time comes take them to the cleaners if they are desperate to keep you just stuff them and leave. It's about time lick asses and brow noses are shown up for the useless tards that they really are and consequences are levied.

Sorry for the rant but this matter is very close to my heart and i Totally refuse to tolerate it.

Can I add my 2p's worth in here?

I agree with all thats been said above in that people will alway choose to promote ones they get on with- its just human nature surely?

As a manager of a team of people (thats going to get bigger in the new year), I would say that I'd always look to promote people that not only can do the job, but show an interest in progressing and going above and beyond in their work.

When I first started out I thought that I should be getting promoted 'because I should'- I could clearly do the job I was doing and I wanted to get on in life, of course I watched the hours- who wouldnt when your life revolves around your mates/girlfriend/weekend!

I thiink some of the comments about licking **** are a bit niave- you have to realise its not licking **** at all, its showing commitment and a desire to get on in life and I think in part its a symptom of the X Factor generation where you think you deserve it- becasue you do.

I've got a real pair of millitant dicks in one of the units- why on earth would I look to promote them when everything is so difficult in regard to every part of my dealing with them.

I want people in my team who have the same goal and the same 'vision', beleive me, you dont want to be dealing with everyone **** on top of your day job.

That said, if you think you have been unfairly treated as part of the interview process, then I suggest you take it up with HR direct and log a grievance, you can of course sort your attitude out and your manager will see this and will go in good stead for next time a position opens up..
