Home multi room speaker setup
Home multi room speaker setup
Right can anyone help.
I'm thinking of installing speakers in Most of the rooms in my house. But I want to be able to link them to a single source.
Then ideally this source can select between my hdd, my tv, the other tv, or an aux in, etc.
And obviously select what rooms it goes to,
Anyone any knowledge or ideas?
So far I'm thinking hard wired speakers in the room/top corners (were still decorating upstairs so I can come in from above), a simple source selection box with an input from the as yet unidentified control hub that can take a signal from the inputs but also read MP3's from my HDD
Or am I in the futuristic/massively expensive area?
The streaming mp3's not hugely important as I could run it through apple tv.
Depends on loads of stuff Stav, I use an Xbox360 in each room and a computer to stream pics/music/movies over a wireless N network. This means I can do everything anywhere in the house. The only room I don't have anything is the kitchen, where I plan on just get a couple of speakers hooked up to the main surround amp that's under the tv.
If you want music, there are a few different options:
1 run a speaker cable, This is easy but the sound quality will be poor and you can only listen to one source unless you get a fancy control box.
2 get a media hub or server or network drive, then use a computer in each room. This is the easiest option, but takes up loads of room.
3 get done media streamers, these will run off a computer or media centre, you can add as many as you want. You can use xbox (old one or 360) or you can use a ps3. These are best if you want to stream video. Or you can get music only, these basically turn a network cable into a signal for speakers if they have a small amp built in, but the best ones just have a line out so you could hook it up to an amp.
Option 3 works around using a pc as your main source. Any windows 7 or vista pc will be fine for this but just remember if your streaming HD video you'll need a pretty powerful pc.
4 you can spend a small fortune on a bespoke system that basically does what option 3 does, but puts all the bits in sexy boxes that you can mount in your walls! Lol!
Depends on your budget and what you plan on using with it mate, I have spent ages playing about with media streaming, and IMO the most stable thing I have used is a windows 7 pc with xbox360's.
Hope this helps,
I can design you a multiroom system with independent zones but as above budget is key this is the current spec for my flat
4 zone amplifier
3x Bose free space systems
1 x media pc
1 x ps3
1 x tv
3 x iPod dock 1 in each room
4 x volume & source selection on single gang back box
1 x custom equipment rack in cupboard for all sources
1 x iPad integration kit to controll from anywhere ( this is the hardest bit as im using multi manufactures so no dedicated interaction language)
300m 1.5mm 2core cable
If you want help working it all out I can advise as this is part of my job lol
Right this is brilliant so far.
Firstly in not after video though. I already have multi room and then sky also tapped into the bedroom so it's really just getting sound throughout the house.
Love the idea of Iphone/iPad integration though Rabs! Tell me more.
oh my system will only be shifting audio around the video is through a separate unit distributing HDMI to each tv which will include the Ipod video
the system i used to use was a Philips Pronto whch you could program every item and then controll over wifi from anywhere in the property
with technology advancing the way it is there are things like WEMO from belkin which will allow you turn items on and off via a mobile device. im still exploring the options of IPAD control fully
so far i have a contact to make the whole of the flat colour change properly and will be demonstrating some of this at JAE this year with the Marquee and grounds.....
do you have a budget in mind for the multi room audio can you also advise on the number of sources you require....
Also have a look at the Sonos system. Great bit of kit that gives you the ability to have seperate speaker systems or use amps that can connect to existing equiptment. These then connect together via a wireless mesh network that they create and can be run from any Android phone, iphone, PC or remote that you can buy.
The speakers can be linked or run individually with different music in each room and can be used with Napster, spotify, Last FM and music stored locally.
Not the cheapest if kit but sound quality is top notch
