FAQ - How Do I upload pictures and videos
This thread will detail the basics of how to perform a number of actions on the forum. Should you find there is no explanation on how to do something you would like to do, please post a note in this thread and we will endeavour to help out...
... Post Photos of My Car?
The forum has two methods available - you can either attach the images directly to a post, or you can provide a web link (known as a URL) to a location on the internet with the picture available.
To attach images, you can click the paperclip icon while writing your post. This will pop up the attachments dialog box which will allow you to select which files from your PC you want to attach. However due to space restrictions (all attached pictures are stored on the OJC servers) the size of attached images is restricted to rather small.
For this reason it is often better to upload your pictures to a photo sharing website such as Photobucket, Picasa or Flickr and simply insert the image link. This will display the picture at full size within the thread and saves space on the OJC servers.
To do this, select a photo sharing site and register with it. You will then have to upload any pictures you want to share from your computer to the site. Once the picture is uploaded you will be given a link. This link will identify your picture on the internet and allow you to make it easily visible to others. In order to add it to a post, simply click the Insert Image button while writing your post (it's the yellow square with what is meant to be a mountain on it - but if you hover your mouse over it the text will pop up anyway to make sure it's the right button). Paste the link you got from the photo sharing site in here and click OK. You will see your link appear in the post surrounded by [img] and [/img] tags.
This will also work for any image you find on the net - so if you find a cool car, you can usually get its link by right clicking on it and selecting Properties (actual option is dependant on the browser), then pasting that link into a post to share your find.
Here is an example:
Image is stored at:
http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m330/...315524.jpg
To embed into the forum simply enclose in tags [img] and [/img].
[noparse][/noparse]
It will look like this in your post when published/previewed:
... Embed Videos?
The simplest way to include videos in your OJC posts is to upload them to YouTube, and reference them from the post. The forum allows you to do this quite easily. From the web address of your video on YouTube, extract the video identifier from the address and enclose it like so [youtube]videoidentifer[/youtube].
Here's an example:
Video link is [noparse]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaWoo82zNUA[/noparse]
Identifier is WaWoo82zNUA
To embed into the forum with the tags:
[noparse][youtube]WaWoo82zNUA[/youtube][/noparse]
Will give you this:
[youtube]WaWoo82zNUA[/youtube]
... Make Web Links Descriptive?
Sometimes it's easier to post a direct web link like so:
http://www.google.co.uk
You can type it in, or use the Insert Link button in the post editor to add it (looks lke a globe with a chain link). The forum will recognise it and display it as a link. But for some links (items on ebay, say) it can be better to display a description for the link, for example:
This link:
http://motors.shop.ebay.co.uk/Cars-/9801...c=0&_arr=1
looks a lot better formatted as:
Toyota Supras currently for sale on EBay
In order to achieve this, simply write your description, and highlight it with your mouse (drag across it with the left button down) before clicking the Insert Link button. This will encode the link into the forum with your description applied.
... Find the Edit Button?
The ability to edit your own posts is only available to fully paid up Members. Such members will either have Outlaw or some other custom title visible on their posts. Non paid up members cannot edit their own posts and will be given titles such as Junior/Senior Member etc based on how often they post on the forum.
In order to become a fully paid up Outlaw (and gain all the additional benefits of being one), follow this link to join up now...
... Gain The Ability to Send/Receive PMs?
All members of the club (paid up or not) have the ability to converse privately over the PM system. Outlaw level members gain an increased message quota however. In order to be able to send/receive these, click the USERCP link in the forum banner at the top of the screen. This will take you to your User Control Panel for the forum, where many of your settings are held. In order to activate PM ability, scroll to the section marked Private Messaging and ensure that Enable Private Messaging is ticked.
... Know Who To Ask For Help?
In general you can ask anyone here and they will try to help; however if you need assistance with a forum issue or you need your post edited, you can PM a moderator/administrator. You can identify who these people are by checking the forum homepage and scrolling down to the bottom. There is a list of online users. If the username you see is in Yellow then the user is a moderator, and if it's in Red then it's an administrator.
Moderators/Administrators should be able to resolve pretty much any issue you are having with the forum itself.
The forum also has a generic FAQ - you can find it here
Hope that helps you get the most of your experience here on OJC - if there are any additional topics/questions you would like covered in here, please feel free to post a request and I'll do what I can...
Nice concise write up there Dave. All this info is already on the forum.... somewhere.... and in many different places, so it's good to have it all in one place, especially for new members.
