would it be possible to do something like this using an in car computer with a direct link to the OBDII, a la centrafuse?

Not sure I like the idea of waiting for my speedo to boot though!

I wouldn't change it in an IS200 cause the speedo is too pretty, but an IS250 might be worth a swap.

Surely the lag of the speedo would depend on how fast the in car computer was?

Well no it would be down to the obd2 speed the first post has a link and he mentions about looking on how to get a direct feed but he has gone quiet typical I'm not sure if there is a lag may very well be fine I've not connect my obd and tested may do tomoz and record some response times
In one way it just seems to easy otherwise everyone would have digital dashes must be a road legal problem at a guess

I think as Jimbob said it's down to the refresh speed of the sensor signals coming through the OBD port, they aren't really designed to be used as a live feed so I don't think they update frequently enough for a smooth display, could be wrong though.

As much as I love the prettiness of the IS200 dials I was actually thinking about seeing if I could replace it with an IS250 dash, just seems much more practical having speed and revs on equal size dials.

the is250 dash is friggin hideous! I was extremely disappointed when I saw it, as that's one of my favourite features of the IS200.

I wonder how after market ECU's can be tweaked to give a faster OBD read out. Using bluetooth will not help anyway, I'd rather have a cable.

I dunno if it helps but with Torque you have a choice of speed signals, you can take the ecu speed or take it from GPS. Whether or not either's quick enough I don't know, but I've seen it updating pretty quickly on mine via Bluetooth tbh

IS200 Sport - Sold
Mazda 6 MPS - Zoom Zoom!

Modifications
Completed:

Currently 280bhp/295lbft; 3" Meercat custom exhaust; KW Suspension; FMIC; SSP; HPFP; Custom Stainless Steel Dials - for the moment, the only set in the world!! (Till the group buy for MPSOC anyway  )

In Progress:

E-Tuning remap ongoing via Cobb Accessport; Braided brake lines; Stubby aerial; Tinted repeaters and sidelights; 3 Port Boost Control Solenoid; 3" HTP Intake

i have fitted a obd dm100 gauge that can handle sprrd and takes the signal direct from the obd and is 100% no lag.
also has all the other info from the obd and can read codes and clear fault codes. might be better to invest in some thing that can do a bit of both

The speed is down to the ecu and the adaptor. Toyota ecus happen to be very fast, so as long as your adaptor is up to the job this shouldn't be a problem.

After market ecus don't support obd2 as a rule.
