hi guys

newbie here looking for advice
i recently replaced the radiator on my 2000 lexus is200 and everything was fine, but now after a couple of days my car is idle'ing and 2k rpm. when i start the car for the first time it is fine but then goes to 2k rpm as stated and my temp gage drops and doesnt seem to work when my car idles high.

if i drive/leave it to idle then turn it off it then wont restart it turns over fast and does eventually start after some time then idle'ing high or revs jump from 2k rpm to 2.5k rpm and bounces between those rpm's

also just changed the Tb today and problem is still there
any advice would be much appreciated

thanks

I might be way off the mark but just before my Celica died the other week because of a leak in the radiator, it idled at 2k. Im wondering if it's a new radiator without any holes in it, are you sure there isn't a leak anywhere in the piping?

if youve replaced the tb check the connector they can be a bit funny sometimes and not reseat properly, did you have the battery disconnected whilst doing it if not it may still think the old tb is still there, give it another reset anyway even if it was discod so it can start from fresh again also check/clean the air flow sensor, and check the thermometer connector on the radiator . let us know after these checks

the water seems fine no wet patches on the ground and not needing to top up the water at all since the rad change, can also see the water circulating so i doubt i have a leak somewhere but will check in the morning to be sure.

i did have the battery connected at the time i changed the tb but will do another reset tommorow also, im unsure of these engines and not very mech minded so could you point me in the right direction to where i can find the air flow sensor and also the rad thermometer is at the bottom left of the rad? (looking towards the rear of the car)...

i forgot to add in my first post i get the smell fuel and quite a bit of greyish/white smoke from my tailpipe but will take your advice and will give it a once over tomorrow and let you know how it goes..

thanks agian for your replys Big Grin

Not sure if an air lock would throw these up but worth a check

done these checks today m8 and everything seems to be ok also did a reset on the ecu by removing the 2 fuses for a min or 2 that i have read about in other posts and idle was still the same.

Mikey Take thr radiator cap off and turn all your heaters on in the car to hot and on high turn the car on an let it warm up

just been out to the car and let it run with the rad cap off heaters on full and i did notice the water got hot fairly quickly and started to rise and trickle out of the rad and alot of air bubbles came out also, after 2 mins the idle was back to normal let it run for a further 5 mins idle never moved and the water had settled down again (stopped trickling and no bubbles) i then gave the car slight aceleration and low and behold the water started to trickle and more bubbles but no high idle,, when it settled down again i replace the rad cap and then the fan cut in and high idle grrrrrrrrrrr

turned the car off in frustration and out of curiosity tried to restart it and it was just turning over so i gave up and called it a day (for now)

could this be down to a bad water pump not pushing the water around the engine fast enough? all my water pipes do get hot when the thermostat opens and both heater matrix pipes also hot to touch..

getting myself a tdi passat today (fir the time being) as i need a car to get to work and back, just hope i get the IS sorted asap

sorry if i didnt not explain very well and for the long post but its somewhat annoying lol.

thanks for you response once again guys and hope you can help me some more ;-)

just a quick update , went out to the car and started it today and it was fine, idle'ing at 1100 rpm and then dropped to around 800rpm when it warmed, did have a little jump in revs for 5 secs but only to around 1400 rpms when cold, dont know if it is cured but seems a little strange how it resolved itself, i didnt re bleed the air out of the coolent system again so just wondering if the stmptoms will re'appear

only time will tell i guess but will keep you guys posted if the problem re'occurs
thanks for all your advice, much appreciated :-)
