Noticed the other night that full (high) beam is awesome - really lights the road up, but regular headlight, not so awesome. I mean, it's not bad, but it's not great.

Is a HID kit a good idea? If so, is it easy to fit? And what sort of price should I be looking at? Naturally, eBay has kits on there for under £30, but knowing nothing about HID, is a £30 HID kit like buying £1.50 wiper blades - ie, ****?

Super easy fit and a few people have the cheap kits with no issues.

Sometimes the power plug will need to be installed the wrong way around - unless manufacturers have solved this issue.

+1 for cheep ebay kit, i have 2 sets high and low beams.
If you think your lights are "awesome" now just wait till you drop in the HID's!!!

Go for 6000k as they give a white clean look, 4300k are the same yellowish you have now.

Would I need two sets to make all beams (high and low) HID? Or do I use one like the link above that is a single bulb version (like the link above) ??

High beam doesn't need to be HID - they take a little time to heat up so not ideal. Besides HIDS are good enough not to need high beam that often.

So would the kit I linked to be right/correct? Fit it in place of the regular (dipped) beam, keep the stock high beam (what about side lights? They stay the same?)

do it properly and install some projectors, at least that way you won't blind people with your badly scattered HID mayhem.

Yep only need to swap the dipped beam, high beam isn't necessary unless you really want it - and if you do you will need to buy 2 kits.

Worth changing the sidelights to LED when you do this or they stick out like a sore thumb (they'll be yellow compared to the much whiter light of your HIDs)

4300K is the OEM colour choice and is probably the whitest (and also the highest light output), 6000K is a slightly bluer white. I have 5000K and look something like below:
