Stix44 Smelly care package!

I friggin love the blue one of those. Smells sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice.

Also, has anyone with an SC considered an air to water intercooler in the intake manifold, like the v8 supercharger kits have?

Chris0121 Can you not get someone to remake one like a vinyl company?

Yeah probably but doing a small run (ie 1) would cost a bomb! And I couldn't be bothered to do a large run and sell them ... Because I'm lazy lol

I love jelly bellys too! Ill get a pic of my current collection.

I've looked into charge coolers (admittedly not in the intake manifold) and from what I've read they are only really any good for drag racing because while water is faster to "take" heat it is much slower to "give it up" so they are only effective in short bursts.

someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that was my reading of charge coolers.

plus the plumbing would probably be a nightmare!

I was under the same impression as you stix to be honest.

Fair enough, water has a pretty good heat capacity, I just reckon you'd need a good pump and a decent enough surface area in the intake. Just wondered, a lot of the supercharged v8s and people like Stillen seem to prefer it, as the temps drop right down.

I'll have to try it out when I've got ridiculous amounts of spare money Big Grin

I've had a think on the train to work and a small IC inbetween the SC and the collector would be do-able (although it would be tiny) and if you just plumbed it into the engine cooling system and mabee added a cooler opening thermostat it might reduce temps enough to be worth it.

Yeah I was just having a few thoughts about how to keep the intake temperatures really low so you could push the boost higher without blowing up. It should be more efficient than air to air, provided the radiator you attach it to at the front of the car is big enough.

I'm only throwing ideas about anyway, been reading up on supercharging a lot lately as I'm past everything else in design stage for v8 stuff. Has anyone tried a centrifugal supercharger on the 1g engine?

Yeah Dave used to have a rotrex on his before he went turbo.

Also the 1ggze is a centrifugal charger.

Back to the charge cooler, would water/meth injection not be a simpler ,ethos to cool the intake temps.

Happy to correct you Big Grin You don't use water in a chargecooler system, you use coolant. Ethylene glycol is good at releasing heat in a radiator system, but it wil also immediately heatsink itself, so all the other cooled coolant in the system is constantly cooling the bit that's just come out of the chargecooler core and is hot. With a efficient radiator, it's miles better at cooling your intake charge than an air to air cooler. This is why Toyota used them on stock motors that generated high boost pressure (and why Jaguar, Aston etc still use them today). A chargecooler was used in preference to air to air on the homologated GT4 ST205 and the system is identical on the actually rallygoing car. It's that good, it's used in WRC.

It is important to match pump size and pressure to the core though, you want the coolant in there long enough to take on as much heat as possible without affecting the efficiency of the core - too fast and it won't take enough heat out, and too slow and you'll lose the benefits over an air to air cooler.

They also basically eliminate heatsoak with decent pump management. It takes ages to cool down an intercooler once it's got properly hot.

The plumbing of one would be a sinch compared to the one I installed on my MR2... radiator at the front, engine in the middle Big Grin

I've done a little reading and by the sounds of it water/meth would be a lot easier and more effective!

I think I'm going to measure my intake temps and then probably add water/meth to the list!
