1988 Nissan Sunny ZX Coupé 1.6 16v

I bought this 18 months ago as a bit of a punt. It was a runner but had problems and wouldn't pass an MOT at the time. I did the work required (and more!) and it's been my daily driver since September 2012.

It is so 80s it hurts. Totally gangster. More sharp edges and corners than Dr Christian's face. YELLOW FOG LIGHTS.

About the car

It's a 1988 Nissan Sunny ZX Coupé in black. Despite being 26 years old, it has a CA16DE engine with full EFI, including individual coil packs & 360 degree cam position as standard, so no distributor etc. It's nominally the same engine as the S13 200SX has, but with 200cc less and no turbo. This makes getting most service and aftermarket parts for it pretty simple. On paper it's ~120bhp - the CA engine has a high compression ratio, so it should be run on super unleaded (and has been during my ownership). It also sports NICS which is the Nissan equivalent of TVIS. There are ~68000 miles on the clock and I have some service history, including the original manual/handbook. It has 14" 4x100 5 spoke alloys on it which I think are from a different model Nissan (maybe a March?) and a motor factors stainless exhaust - aside from those and the stereo it's totally standard. It's got a recent-ish Halfords battery fitted by the previous owner. The jack & some other parts from the original tool kit are present, along with a good full-size spare wheel (which I've put about 100 miles on in my ownership, so I know it's good). It has electric windows & mirrors, but strangely no central locking. It even has a bulb failure warning light! Pretty advanced for 1988. I have the original key & 2 valet keys, and it has locking wheel nuts for which I have the key.

Stuff I've done in my ownership

Exhaust manifold skimmed and all threads retapped as 1 stud was snapped and 1 thread was mangled. New studs & nuts from Nissan and refitted.
Replaced indicator stalk as full beam was unreliable
Had front calipers refurbished by Bigg Red
New pads all round & rear discs. Rear discs on this car form the rear wheel hub, so the studs and bearing are pressed directly into the disc. This is a git of a job so hadn't been done by previous owners.
Renewed 2 failed CV boots
Repaired the heated rear window switch as this had failed and finding a working replacement was very difficult
Replaced the thermostat w/Genuine Nissan
Replaced the headlight connectors with repair harnesses as they were corroded and had got hot and partially melted
Fitted Halfords extreme brilliance H4 headlights
Sealed the rear lights to stop them leaking
Fitted new Dunlop SP Sport FastResponse tyres all round
Fitted a replacement ECU after the original failed (you can NisTune the ECU in this car)
Repaired a failed front foglight
Replaced front droplinks as they were knocking
Full service - all fluids & filters (incl gearbox oil), oil filter was a Genuine Nissan, air and fuel filters were Blueprint
Repaired blower motor ducting so that all the cold air actually reaches the heater matrix instead of blowing onto the passenger's feet
Repaired bootlid and reattached rear spoiler
Replaced the driver's door hinge as it had fallen and the door didn't line up
Fitted a new Borg & Beck clutch kit, changed the gearbox oil again!

Fitted some ICE - A Sony Xplod head unit with a front USB input and a headphone jack aux input, CD/MP3 player. A Soundstream Rubicon 2 channel amplifier. An Alpine Type S 10" subwoofer in the boot. 2 Kenwood 3-way 6x9s in the rear and some Infinity 6.5" speakers in the doors. I had to modify the door cards a little to fit the Infinity speakers and part of the speaker is visible. The 6x9s fitted into the stock rear speaker holes.

As well as the car, you will get:

A rather comprehensive box of spare parts, including:
2 headlight clusters
2 rear light clusters
2 exterior trim panels which fit underneath the rear lights
1 Blueprint CV boot kit
4 ignition coils
The original head unit
Spare bulbs, switches, etc
1 horn button
1 genuine Nissan water pump
1 Gates timing belt kit
1 rubber gearstick gaitor
Almost a complete spare driver's door in white! Glass, doorcard etc.
1 set of spare parcel shelves (it has 2, 1 that lifts with the boot and one that doesn't).
A motorfactors kit for rebuilding the power steering pump
A spare clutch friction plate

Bad things about the car

I don't know when the timing belt was last done, it should be every 60,000 miles or 5 years. The current belt looks to be in good condition. A new one is included in the sale, along with a new water pump. There is a broken piece of trim around the passenger side rear 1/4 window which I am hoping to source a replacement for prior to sale. The sunroof is sealed shut with tiger seal. I believe there's a sunroof specialists in Bristol who would be able to supply a new sunroof seal for it.

Good things about the car

I've driven it pretty much every day since I got it and it's only let me down once - when the rear lights leaked water in and it got into the ECU. I have resealed the rears and replaced the ECU, as detailed above, so this won't happen again.

Always starts and runs first time, idles fine at the correct speeds hot or cold. The ZX Coupe has uprated suspension, fat anti roll bars front and back and disc brakes all round, as well as the body kit, rear spoiler and front fog lights.

The bodywork is excellent for the age. Some of you have kids that are older than this car!! There are certainly paint blemishes, but it polishes up well, and there is minimal rust on the body. Despite having plastic side skirts like a MK1, there is no rust on the sills that I've seen, and I have had the skirts off.

MOT until August, Taxed for 6 months. Located near Milton Keynes.

£1350
