Hi guys, long time no speak - hope everyone is OK Smile

My LS460 recently developed a rattle from the front drivers side. It's triggered more by rumbles/vibrations from an uneven surface rather than speedbumps or large pot holes.

It sounds a bit like a washer vibrating on a metal tray (for what that's worth)!

Interestingly though it gets a LOT worse when the car is in 'Comfort' suspension mode, and is nowhere near as bad in 'Sports' mode. So it seems that having the suspension higher gives this thing more room to rattle.

I noticed in the service history that the front passenger air strut was replaced 30k ago, so I'm worrying that there is a large bill on the horizon.

Help appreciated as always Smile

Yeah she's been good as gold up to now. Almost on 140k too.

I had the wheels off at the weekend to see if there was anything obvious. Everything looked tight, and I couldn't manage to shake anything to reproduce the noise.

Without hearing it I wouldn't like to guess, LS shock absorbers can go noisy, the upper suspension arm bushes also split, if you jack the front end up and turn the wheel to full lock you'll be able to see if the bush is split, doubt it'd rattle though, where u based?

Nah, I keep toying with the idea of getting some VIP style 20's and dropping the car down on existing air ride but I just don't have the time these days. Poor car has only been washed 4 times by me in almost 2 years!

I'm in wickford, essex mate. I'll have another look this weekend but from what I remember everything looked in pretty good condition.

I did get a recording of the noise. I'll try to clean it up and then upload it.

Here's the cleaned up audio file.

(sorry had to upload elsewhere as this forum wouldn't let me attach anything)

I'd like to think its just a bushing...but my gut is telling me that the shock is knackered Confused

OK guys, a bit of an update on this.... I just found out that the noise is totally suppressed when I apply the brakes!

I just traveled for about 1/2 mile over some really uneven road with my brakes lightly pressed and there was not a single rattle to be heard!

Could this possibly just be brake pads rattling about in the calipers?

Does seem odd that the pads would rattle, then are normally a snug fit
