Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help.
My mechanic thinks that my manual IS200 might have had an auto diff fitted at some point.
His reason for this is because at 70mph the car is revving at 3k - is this about right for a manual? Or might he be right?
Any help would be great!
The is200's are terribly high on revs on the motorway mate
The auto diff is a 4.3 and the manual sport diff is 4.1. You will be doing nearly 4k rpm at 85, so 3k at 70 sounds right with the manual diff.
makes me wonder. What will happen when you put the auto diff to a manual is200?
Will that make the gears longer?
The is200 with supercharger is really asking for some longer gears.
I know that the speedometer will tell you the wrong speed but maybe you can get higher topspeed and have longer gears.
you will obtain exactly the opposite with the auto diff you will make the gears shorter, you can put bigger tyres(diameter) on the rear wheels and you will obtain some gaines but you will reduce the acceleration a litle
the best solution it is to modify the 6 gear only with better gear ratio, but you need to open the gear box and find coppatible gear but with different ratio.
In this way you preserve the acceleration in al the gears except 6 gear who will be for crousing and better economy.
Use an S15 6 speed. Same gearbox designation as the IS200, I'd just find one of those gearboxes and see if it bolts on to the IS200. That will leave you doing about 3700rpm at 85 on the motorway, about 8% fewer revs. 1st gear is also slightly less aggressive, but there isn't much in it between the other 4.
You could do a supra rear end swap, there are some much lower diff ratios available but it will leave the car a bit wide; you will also start running into problems with the speedo giving you an incorrect reading. I reckon a diff swap is definitely the way to go though, you can keep your normal 6 speed and make all 6 gears longer in one go. Either way will cost you money.
I've done some digging and apparently some of the 4-runner diffs are the same size as the IS300 diffs, which might mean you can get a 3.071 ratio with an IS300 rear end and 4-runner ring/pinion. Could be the closest thing to a bolt in solution, but I've no idea for certain whether the 4-runner diff will actually fit. They are both toyota 8" diffs from the same series (I think).
