19-08-2016, 06:23 AM #1Another one of F1's worst-kept secrets, but Ferrari have now confirmed Alonso for next season. Raikkonen is expected to join Hamilton at Mclaren, and Kubica to replace Alonso at Ferrari.

At the end of the day Kimi won the title in 07, they won the constructors in 08 (which he contributed towards) and in 09 has been a class act despite having poor machinery. In many ways Kimi and Lewis have proved how good they both really are this season by their consistent good results in mediocre cars.
As long as he goes back to McLaren though I'm pretty happy, as I always preferred supporting him as a McLaren driver than a Ferrari one, and the prospect of Lewis and Kimi in the same team sounds like a good one as they're both d*mn fast and neither of them will get in the other's face like Alonso did.
Guess it's time to burn that Ferrari flag I have! :lol:

Yep no big surprise, it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but in my book it's more down to Santander becoming the major sponsor than anything else.

I would rate Alonso as a better driver than Raikonnen, so it makes sense to me from Ferrari's side, and just about any driver would love to drive for Ferrari so I can see the attraction for Alonso too (especially after Renault promised much this season but delivered almost nothing, race-fixing aside).

Bobby A Ferrari source told BBC Sport there are options to extend Alonso's deal, and that he will be earning an annual salary in the region of 19-25 million euros (£17.3-22.8m).
Not a bad wage either !
Kimi's salary at Ferrari was supposed to be $51m a year, and it is also speculated that the reason for the delay in announcing alonso was getting Raikkonen out of his contract as he wanted to be paid in full for 2010 (which is fair enough, he had a contract after all)
If that is all true, he's probably done quite well out of it as I'm sure McLaren wouldn't pay a bad wage either!

It doesn't make sense for Ferrari - I'm a little biased anyway, but I don't think there's a lot between Kimi and Alonso, and I think Ferrari will realise this very shortly. The massive cost of buying Kimi out of his contract can't be worth it, so can only be because the benefit of having Santander as a sponsor is much more worthwhile.
I do agree that Alonso is probably better at putting the time in develop the car, but Kimi is by far the quicker race driver, plus he makes fewer unforced errors than Alonso does (well in the past anyway, he has been better of recent times).
In any case, the dream result now would be for Kimi to take the huge payout and then win the title with McLaren, Ferrari would be pretty sick at that - only thing standing in the way in my book is Lewis :biggrin:

I do agree that Raikkonen isn't as consistent as someone like Schumacher, but I think Alonso is massively overrated. At the end of the day, he should have walked away with the 2007 title, as Kimi didn't get started till half way through the season and the McLaren was generally the faster car.
The fact is, he didn't. And that's simply because in part he started whining like a little girl, and also due to the fact he kept crashing his car.
Obviously if he romps away with the title in 2010, then there won't be a problem. However, the more likely scenario is that Massa will put up a decent fight, and it will be McLaren all over again.
Based on the facts, in my view it's Alonso who has the attitude problem. Someone who starts complaining when the whole world doesn't revolve around him is a t**t in my book. Raikkonen may not be the most talkative person, but he keeps to himself, keeps his head down and gets the job done.
It's also worth considering that the reason Kimi left McLaren was because he fell out with Ron Dennis - he should have won the title in 2003 and 2005 but was let down by unreliability (I suppose quite similar to Massa losing the title last year)
It's a shame that the corporate world is interfering, but I'm 100% sure that the only reason they've ended the contract a year early is because of Santander, otherwise there was absolutely no reason to do so, Alonso could have joined in 2011
