I have had this problem since i first put the engine in my IS200. I have been through 2 sets of second hand genuine Toyota coils and 2 brand new sets of surefire coils, The first being standard and then the second they sent the uprated red ones.

The old Toyota ones didnt last long, but were second hand.

The first black surefire ones lasted a couple of months and developed cracks, they replaced these for free with the uprated ones.

It has been running on the red ones kind of ok but not always, last week i started the car for the first time in a month and it was only running on 3 / 4 cylinders. Pulled the coils and sparks to find 3 cracked up spark plugs and one of the red coil packs also crack (all from the hottest part of the back of the engine)

Now its a known problem about these cracking, and its down to the heat, also being in the is200 maybe there is less cooling than required but this is driving me around the bend.

What other options are available? better cooling or changing coils?

I have a **** load of old 1g fe coils from the old lexus, I have seen a build where someone has changed his coils for yaris ones (which are similar to the 1g fe ones) and has said they run alot better. But will these just eventually crack up the same? Does running colder spark plugs help?

I will probably try the 1g fe coils anyway unless someone knows that this wont solve the problem, or run the power the 1jz is capable of.

cheers

It could be the conditions in your engine bay getting too hot. It sounds silly but bonnet spacers could help
