R35GTR owners beware!
Quote:I consider myself a fairly competent driver, I can drive reasonably quickly on a circuit, and read the road ahead enough to make good progress on the public highway. But I had an accident, and it was all my own doing.
I had a low speed crash into the back of a white van, it was a badly surfaced road, we were stopped, pulled away.... and the person infront of the van stopped for no reason, causing the van to tap the tow bar of the car infront and me in sympathy to do the same to the van.
Ok enough of the excuses, I am posting here to make sure noone makes the same mistake I did. I thought long and hard about posting this, but i think it is important that other GTR owners see this so they aren't stung by a careless accident and the GTR Tax!
I bumped into tho the white vans tow bar causing this small crack in my bumper...
Unfortunately it also set off the Pedestrain Saftey system, where the bonnet pops up....
Which is a one use system....
You need to replace the bumper, rams, bonnet hinges....
and of course the ECU
When the accident happened i called my dealer and asked them to collect the car and told them i would just pay for it without putting it through my insurance.
Then i found out the total cost of the repairs.
Eleven Thousand Pounds.
I'm pleased to report the car has been repaired perfectly, even if it took 5 weeks!
But I fear GTR insurance won't be so cheap next year for any of us. Sorry about that! But don't do what I did. And if you hit a pedestrain, make sure you are reveresing

Taken from the GTRoc forums, all I can say is someone must be getting very rich!

hock: eleven grand, good idea the bonnet popping to cushion the blow to pedestrians but surely you should be able to just push it closed again, what if some drunked fool falls on the car when it's parked up would it happen then or does it only work when the cars moving. Eleven grandhock:

not sure of the ins and outs of it Andy but still it's insane one of the questions raised was what happens if you clip a curb will it pop?
Or worst case scenario chavs get wind of this and creat a game of Jackie Chan kicking the front

I really don't like the sound of these pop up bonnets - I can't imagine they make that much of a difference, but the cost of these insurance claims will be catastrophic. I know it's not quite as much on other cars, but it still turns a small nonsense impact into a claim for thousands of pounds.
Imagine what his premium for next year is going to be.........
11 grand hock:
That's a joke, no way should it cost so much to replace something like that. Oh dear, sky-high insurance for GTR owners !
If you disabled that system, could it cause you any trouble? If I bought a GT-R I'd definitely have that switched off!
Outrageous cost and the system looks to be a tiny bit trigger happy, but if you can afford a GTR I assume you can afford the insurance and associated running costs.

2tongues Outrageous cost and the system looks to be a tiny bit trigger happy, but if you can afford a GTR I assume you can afford the insurance and associated running costs.Just my opinion but I don't really agree with that, an £11k repair on a veyron is fine after such a tiny bump - but that on a £50k car is not ok at all. I don't think of cars like the GT-R being totally out of the realm of something I could afford someday, but with potential repair bills like that the insurance would no way be affordable.
Sparkystav I bet the GTR would know, and then so would nissan at the next service.Oh no I meant do it with Nissan's knowledge (actually get them to disable it). The problems I referred to would be things like whether insurance cover might be different if that system wasn't active..........
