OK so I've changed my plans a bit as to what to do with my router and modem - thinking about getting Virgin to come in and move the cable connection and modem into the cupboard on the landing, and have some sort of network switcher there, which I could then run cables to wall sockets around the house whenever it becomes possible. Few questions though:

1. Is this as simple to implement as it seems in my head?
2. What sort of switcher and stuff will I need for this, and where can I get it?
3. Can I still keep my wireless router and will that simply plug into one of the ports on the switcher?

This will depend on your wireless router signal.
You may find the signal weak as i do in one of my rooms but its fine in all the others.

Do Virgin offer extra wireless doggles for you to purchase, so you can stay cable free?

Trying to do the opposite actually, I want to do this so that whenever a bit of redecorating is done, I can stick a hardwired network connection in so it's always solid.

Want to retain the wireless for using laptops and mobiles and stuff, but slowly want all the fixed locations (desktops, PS3) to have fixed connections. Using powerline at the mo, which works well but isn't as fast as a gigabit ethernet connection.

Are you planning to stick with the Powerline networking, or are you talking about installing some Ethernet cabling ?

Make sure the modem/router/etc doesn't overheat in the cupboard either !

IS200 Turbo project now just about complete ! See my thread here and leave your comments.
Now running standalone Syvecs ECU and no stock ECU !

Sorry i understand now Parthiban.

Are you going to use a hub to connect each cable to off one machine?

As with all cables buy the best you can afford and this will help the signal to travel that little bit further and quicker.

No this is to replace the powerline stuff, want to install proper network cables - initially only to the room being redecorated, but with the hub centrally located will be easy to run cables anyway via the loft and outside.

This is a much bigger cupboard (roughly 5ft square) so it should be fine heatwise.

So basically if I get a switcher, and plug all the cables into it, everything will just communicate with each other ok? Or is there some setup involved?

You will need to set up one computer machine as the admin with the main feed to this and then the hub to feed off this to the other plugs.

Ahh this is the info I was after, so I can't do what my wireless router does and plug modem into router, and then everything else into router and everything will be connected?

I was hoping the switcher would do the same thing the router does, so it's not all quite just plug and play?

No, you should be able to do just as you suggest, if you've got a Virgin cable modem, plug it into your router, then put Ethernet cables from there to your other PCs if you want.

Yh that would work perfectly, just make sure you router is a cable one not phone line
