Just been offered a straight swap for my car a BMW 325 Ci Sport (2004), so I think ooohhhh thats a nice car will sell easy enough, HPI checked it and it isn't a 325 its a 320Cd (even better), but had 3 cat D's against it and a cat C when it was stolen only 2 months ago.................... Shame.

This is the 4th car to fail HPI check so this goes to show how important it is to check any potential car out there are a lot of dodgy cars out there.

I always check - its only £3 so why take the risk.

I agree with you, I'd always want to check with a private sale. With a trader's sale you have a bit more protection (e.g. consumer laws etc), and the trader will probably have done the check themselves, but you should either make sure you see their paperwork on that or do your own check too.

Did you know that a dealer can get a better HPI check than the genral public.
You would of hoped that these should be the same service.

It had 3 cat Ds? Sorry if I've misunderstood, but does that mean it's been written off 3 times?

Do all stolen cars show up as cat C or just ones where there has been a payout? As an example my car was stolen and recovered in 2005 - will it show up as a cat C on a check?

I'd never try and hide it anyway, but just wondered how it works.

I think it depends on a case by case basis, if it was reported as such and how much damage was done.

Just because it was stolen doesn't mean its a cat c - it needs damage and in insurance pay out and on a 8K car at least 60% to make it cat c that is a LOT of damage!!

Yea written off 3 times (4 if you count the cat C) and only 50K on the clock.

Oh then mine probably won't be recorded as such, no damage at all, only payout was to replace locks and keys (admittedly that cost £1000 but not major considering)

Surely to write off a 2004 BMW even the first time would have either taken quite a lot of damage or chassis damage? Sounds like a pretty scary car........

A few years ago I looked at Audi A4 for me dad, car was lovely, FASH, had in the region of 70 odd thousand miles, trader had HPI certificate, under the NMR it said n/a.

I wasn't convinced so I spoke to Audi head office, they checked the audi database and I was told that the car was last serviced at the main dealer and the mileage recorded was 136,000 miles!:ohmy:

I spoke to the trader, he said he knew nothing about it and that the car's came from up north as p/x from an Audi garage. Yeh Yeh!

What company do you use for HPI check's Phil?

The one and only supercharged IS300!
