B15RUP A few years ago I looked at Audi A4 for me dad, car was lovely, FASH, had in the region of 70 odd thousand miles, trader had HPI certificate, under the NMR it said n/a.

I wasn't convinced so I spoke to Audi head office, they checked the audi database and I was told that the car was last serviced at the main dealer and the mileage recorded was 136,000 miles!:ohmy:

I spoke to the trader, he said he knew nothing about it and that the car's came from up north as p/x from an Audi garage. Yeh Yeh!

What company do you use for HPI check's Phil?

I have been using https://www.mycarcheck.com

Lexusboy If you are buying a car it worth the £3 to save losing even more of your hard earned cash.

Well one of my mates bought a car for £10000 and he got it checked like you are going on about, all was clear , so he bought it. Then 2 weeks later police came to his door and asked for a look at the car. It had been stolen so they took it back and he ended up with nothing.

So its worth doing more than the hpi check , you should also get the RAC / AA to have a look also.

The police said it was one of the best cloned cars they had seen, meaning it was very very hard to spot the signs.

So moral to the story is the £3 check is NOT good enough when buying a car from a private seller

Lexus IS200 Mods--TTE Supercharger, Tein Superstreet Coilovers & EDFC, 6000K HID Lights, HKS Silent High Power Exhaust, DBA Front Discs, Kenwood DNX9240 Head Unit, 19" Rims, TRD Kit, FIGS Bonnet Struts, Greddy Pillar Pod & Defi Gauges, TTE Red ARBS . And Been To WIM twice

I think your mate was very very unlucky though. The HPI check should be fine in the vast majority of cases. But if the car has been cloned, and has the "wrong" VIN number on it, then the HPI check won't show up the true problem, you're right. You need to have a close look to see if it looks like there's anything dodgy about the VIN where it's stamped on - and even then, as perhaps in this example, if it's a *really* good job you might not be able to tell.

Probably no-one would have spotted that car as a ringer unless they had been specially trained to do so.

Not sure what the signs were that it was cloned , but the police had it for 2 or 3 days before they came back to him and gave him the bad news.

If you are like me being offered several cars, it is only worth the £3 check to weed out the trash otherwise I would spend £100 before making a decision!!. I would then more than likely go for the gold level that insures me against false info.

Thinking about a Corrola Tsport at the moment!!
