Have you considered:

Punto, Corsa (don't burn the alloys on it or post up NSFW photos on photobucket!), Fiesta, Yaris (pref one without a stickly acc pedal!)?

Mods:...WIM geometry setup & fine tune, K&N Air filter, Stainless steel A/C rings, Brodit phone kit, Stainless steel clock surround, B&M Shortshifter & LED Domelight, Maplight & Sun Visors, OEM Chrome exhaust tip, OEM rubber bootliner, Fan type windscreen washer jets, LS430 Side repeaters, OEM LE grille, OEM cargo net, Front OEM armrest

Not sure about prices, but the yaris is probably a decent little car, I've driven the auto ones as courtesy cars and they're not too bad.

You should be able to pick up a 9/10 year old Yaris for about £1.5k- not many autos in this price range mind, plenty of manual cars.
