Dilemma
Dilemma
I sure most of you know I've been battling with a brake vibration problem for a while now, well had the car in at WIM over the weekend and they've discovered what the problem is. I have warped drive flanges (whatever they are) so am going to need new ones as well as new hubs, bearings, brake discs and pads. Actually it was quite alarming to see how warped my brake discs were - I always thought it isn't something that's that visible but mine are really bad!
Anyway, got the call I was dreading this morning, and it's going to cost £900 to have that all sorted. And that's got me thinking what to do? Should I just do it, have the car back to normal and stick with it? Or does it make more sense just to p/ex it for something else? Thing is I don't like the idea of a repair that's like a quarter of the value of the car, but then I'm not really interested in spending a lot on another at this point in time which would mean buying something older and that doesn't make sense either as you don't know what problems that might come with - at least this car has been with me for over 7 years and I know that other than this it's completely spot on (except the CD player of course! :tongue_smilie: )
What's the best plan now?
It's always a dilemma when you have an expensive repair to do, and your heart tells you to do the repair and keep the car, but your head tells you that you should just sell it !
If you're happy with the car in all other aspects I'd personally get it repaired. But if you were starting to be bored with it and/or think of getting something else anyway, or you have other niggles with it, then I'd chop it in.
The price quoted by WIM- is that the best price they can do the work for?
If you did chop in the IS200, what would you replace it with? IS250?
This is where the problem is, my plan was to change the car maybe after another 2 years and to replace with something good. Maybe something like a 335i, or maybe an M3/ISF, who knows but it would have been something £30k and up.
However right now I have other plans so buying an expensive car is not in the equation, so yes it would be something like maybe a 4-5 year old IS250 or something similar, definitely under £20k, possibly even £15k.
Yep I think the WIM price isn't too bad at all, it's all Lexus OEM parts and the parts are what's making up the majority of the cost - they said 2 hours labour and they've discounted that too.
If an M3 or ISF is on the cards in the next 2 years, then your best bet (to me) is to get the work done by WIM and stick with the IS200 for now.
I think that's a good quote to do all that work !

parthiban Yeah I don't think the price is too bad, I think the parts alone are almost £700.........:crying:

Parthiban i think it also depends on what other things are due to come up in the next year or so like service tyres etc:
I think if that your car back to were it should be with little other expensives than keep the car till your ready to invest in what you really want.
If you keep the car with little outlay over 24 months that less than £500 per year.
If you buy another car that £1000 bill will be lost as soon as you take delivery of the replacement used car and drive off unless you get a trade price and top price on your px
Good point actually, it might be cheaper to get the parts from Lexus (as they give me 10% off) and then take them to WIM to be fitted but that would be a little cheeky, especially as they checked everything out for me free of charge despite it taking up about 2 hours of their time so probably won't.
Yep you're prob right, if I p/exd now I guess I'd be lucky to even get £4k and obviously the dealer would always be the winner, so while I'm thinking spending £1k on a £4k car is a lot, I'll probably lose more on the new one plus I'd have to fork out so much more cash and it would also depreciate faster than my current IS is.
No major expenses hopefully (touch wood), tyres are good, otherwise car feels bulletproof so the regular service should be it for the year.
