Marsdendean Do coil-overs just make the ride harder or lower the car?

They are normally adjustable for ride height. But what else they can do varies. For example, basic coilovers don't have adjustable damping. Others do have adjustable damping. Some have separately adjustable damping and rebound (for really fine tuning).

Whether they make the ride harder depends on the spring rates and the damping (possibly adjustable).

I find it very suprising that you say that coilovers will only last 30k km Dimis, where is that information from ?

Depends on what aspect of handling you want to improve. Yes, I would say uprated ARBs would give you the biggest handling improvement, compared to coilovers. Combining both would be even better, but ARBs will make an absolutely huge difference on their own. Uprated ARBs will make the car much flatter around corners - ARBs are countering the tendency of the car to roll outwards as you go around a corner (which can be a disconcerting feeling, alters the weight of the car to the outside and can unsettle it).

Coilovers would let you adjust the ride height of the car. If you got ones with adjustable damping, then you could alter that to give you the sort of ride you want. Coilovers may also be a big improvement if your shocks are very old and worn - but then again, so would just plain new shocks !

Lexus IS200 Mods--TTE Supercharger, Tein Superstreet Coilovers & EDFC, 6000K HID Lights, HKS Silent High Power Exhaust, DBA Front Discs, Kenwood DNX9240 Head Unit, 19" Rims, TRD Kit, FIGS Bonnet Struts, Greddy Pillar Pod & Defi Gauges, TTE Red ARBS . And Been To WIM twice

Really liked the TTE coilovers i had on mine, very nice ride and worked well :thumbup: and when matched with the TTE arbs the car was fantastic to drive :thumbup1:

I have the BC Racing coilovers. They have adjustable damping. I felt that the ride of the TTE lowering springs combined with my C-One ARBs was very harsh, it would crash in and out of small potholes etc. Hoping it'll be a lot better with the coilovers !

Coilovers do not last more that 30000km. They are usually made for tracks, and not for every day driving. Also most or all of the uprated coilovers are made out of aluminium or leightweigt alloy, which mean they are not favourable in harsh roads,i.e pots and bumps. On the other hand OEM shocks are made from other alloys (i am not sure of what metal, i think steel) so withstand more the harsh roads. If you have a search on the web you will find out that most coilovers fail around 30000-40000km, especially those that are made in taiwan!

Then you will not have any problems mate. My ksports are aluminium which are half the weight of OEM but as I said they are fragile!

I have had good reports for the BC's alot of the scooby owners swear by them!!

I have had reports that people find the TEINs too hard for everyday driving to the point I know 3 people that have taken them off and gone for BCs!!

I would suggest the ones from Tawain are cheap metals which is why they break down, I think if you get them from a reputable known company such as BC, TTE and TEIN etc, avoid hitting the big potholes you won't have too much of a problem.
