Unfortunately yesterday afternoon my father was involved in a hit and run on the A406 - was driving along in the left lane minding his own business when a truck that was in middle lane just pulled across without indicating and smashed into the front of the prius and then drove off without stopping.

I'm overly a**l about driving alongside trucks so have been giving him a bit of a hard time but obviously it's not entirely fair as he didn't technically do anything wrong. Thankfully it's just a bit of bent metal and no one was hurt but it does p**s me off that these truck drivers firstly give the other decent ones a bad name, and secondly think they can get away with it because they're in such a large vehicle.

The damage isn't horrendous, going to need a new drivers door and front wing (and maybe a new bumper) so could have been a lot worse, but still trying to do everything I can to make sure he doesn't get away with it. Insurance have been told and a police report has been filed. Also got in touch with CCTV for the area but that was a bit of a dead end - freedom of information act means I have access to the info, but data protection act doesn't allow me to get any footage where I can make out anyone else or anyone else's vehicle (so pretty useless!)

Is there any other avenue I can explore or is it now just left to the police and insurance co to follow this up? Not holding out too much hope as truck drivers have a funny way of escaping this sort of thing though.........

One other thing I found interesting, while chatting to the guy at the bodyshop, he told me that they can no longer slide through a little additional work with insurance repairs like they used to (not that I was trying to, I was just curious) as it's all computerised. Whatever parts are required, it's now all set how much labour/paint/etc is required so they can't put through a little bit extra.

My friend had a truck hit his car and he did not have a pen so the time he got home he forgotten part of the number plate and he report to the police and they never found the driver.

Thanks mate, yeah he's fine, he's trying not to show it but I think he's a bit shaken up by it though. He took down the plates and it's been passed on to the insurers and the police, but my personal opinion is that without some CCTV footage it's going to be hard to pin down anyway.

At least your Dad is ok, even if the car isn't could have been an awful lot worse.

Good news that you got the number plate. Often this sort of thing would probably go down as 50/50, if there aren't any witness etc. But I wonder if the fact the lorry driver didn't stop would count against him ? Let's hope so.

Hope your dads okay buddy, and you get it sorted.

but without trying to defend the lorry driver, if when he is contacted i am almost 100% certain of his reply "i didnt notice a thing"

This isnt him denying it happend, merely telling the truth, you have to have a pretty hard shunt in a lorry to notice you have hit anything.

my stepdad has been driving lorrys for 30 years and the amount of times he is contact by work/police in relation to incidents that he never knew happened are unreal.

but as i said, i hope it does get sorted for you Smile

Yeah I can actually understand that, if that is true it might make the insurance claim move along smoothly once they track him down.
